In a landmark decision aimed at strengthening Bihar’s energy infrastructure, the Central Government has given its nod to the establishment of a nuclear power plant in the state. The announcement was made during the 5th Conference of Power Ministers of Eastern Region States and Union Territories held in Patna on Tuesday. Union Power Minister Mr. Manohar Lal Khattar agreed to the proposal, marking a major step toward energy self-sufficiency in the state. The Union Government has also formulated a broader plan to develop at least one nuclear power plant in every Indian state by 2035. Additional 500 MW Power to Be Supplied In response to Bihar’s growing electricity demands, the Centre also approved an additional supply of 500 MW power for the next six months. The state had earlier requested a total of 1,000 MW for power storage. The Union Minister assured that the government would assist Bihar in achieving this target gradually. Bihar’s Rapid Progress in Power Sector Mr. Khattar praised the remarkable progress Bihar has made in recent years in the power sector, especially the installation of over 80 lakh smart meters. “This is a record. Bihar was once seen as backward in electricity infrastructure, but it has now made commendable progress,” he said. India Emerging as Power Exporter Highlighting India’s growing capacity, Mr. Khattar mentioned that the country, once known for power shortages, is now fully meeting its internal demand and exporting electricity to neighbouring nations such as Bhutan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Nepal. The nuclear power project in Bihar is expected to significantly boost the state's energy capacity, promote industrial growth, and ensure reliable electricity access for millions of residents.
