New Delhi: In a major push to strengthen India’s military preparedness, the Defence Acquisition Council chaired by Rajnath Singh as approved defence proposals worth ₹2.38 lakh crore, aimed at significantly enhancing the strike capability of the armed forces. The approvals were granted under the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) framework, a critical first step in defence procurement that allows the acquisition process to move forward. Focus on Army modernisation and artillery strength A major share of the approved amount will go toward modernising the Indian Army. The Army will also procure: armour-piercing tank ammunition advanced radio relay communication systems tracked air defence systems runway-independent surveillance drones These systems are expected to strengthen battlefield coordination and improve surveillance along sensitive border sectors. S-400 missile system among biggest Air Force approvals For the Indian Air Force, one of the most significant approvals is for additional integration of the S-400 Triumf missile system, regarded globally as one of the most advanced air defence shields. The Air Force will also receive: new Medium Transport Aircraft combat drones engine overhaul support for Sukhoi Su-30MKI fleet These steps aim to replace ageing AN-32 and IL-76 aircraft and improve operational readiness. Drones to improve surveillance in inaccessible border areas A notable part of the procurement focuses on drones capable of operating without runway support. These systems are intended for: mountainous terrain surveillance border monitoring quick deployment in remote sectors Coast Guard to receive Air Cushion Vehicles The Indian Coast Guard will receive heavy-duty Air Cushion Vehicles for maritime security operations. These vehicles are expected to support: high-speed coastal patrolling search and rescue missions logistics movement in shallow waters Record defence approvals in FY 2025-26 Rajnath Singh said that in the current financial year, 55 defence proposals worth ₹6.73 lakh crore have already received approval, making it the highest annual defence clearance so far.
