Former CEO of Niti Aayog and a retired 1980 batch IAS officer, Amitabh Kant, has been named as the new Sherpa of G-20, a group representing the world’s largest economies.
The appointment was approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi where Kant will take over from Union commerce, industry and consumer affairs minister Piyush Goyal.
Kant has played a very important role during his stint as the CEO of government think tank, Niti Aayog, for almost six and a half years. He was the person behind “God’s own country” campaign to promote tourism.
As India assumes the G-20 presidency later this year, the appointment comes at a very crucial time where grounds will be set ahead of the next week’s meeting in Indonesia.
Sherpas for G20 meetings do the groundwork for their leaders and act as their envoys for several G20 meetings and provide crucial policy inputs.
Previous sherpas include former Planning Commission chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, RBI governor Shaktikanta Das and former Niti Aayog VC Arvind Panagariya.
