Once known for its money order economy, Uttarakhand has undergone a phenomenal transformation since its creation in 1999. Before attaining statehood, this picturesque yet economically struggling region was part of Uttar Pradesh, with minimal industrial activity and limited agricultural output.
But the tide has turned.

A report by the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council highlights Uttarakhand’s remarkable economic strides:

• Industrial economy grew 9.5 times (2000-2020)
• State-Owned Tax Revenue (SOTR) increased 18 times in 22 years

✅-Per capita income surged from ₹15,285 (2001) to ₹2.61 lakh (FY 2023), surpassing the national average.

The planned industrial revolution played a crucial role in this success. The state established Integrated Industrial Estates (IIEs) in Haridwar, Pantnagar, and Sitarganj, along with hubs like Pharma City (Selaqui), IT Park (Sahastradhara, Dehradun), and a growth center at Siggadi (Kotdwar).

The ultimate recognition of Uttarakhand’s progress came in 2024, when the NITI Aayog crowned it the top-performing state in the SDG Index. In a stunning feat, Uttarakhand outpaced even the most developed, industrialized, and literate states, proving that strategic governance and determined leadership can create exponential growth.
