How Anju Yadav Overcame Social Barriers and Became a Deputy Superintendent of Police

Anju Yadav, a widow from rural Haryana, overcame confinement and societal barriers to become a DYSP, inspiring women through education, empowerment, and courage.
Indian Masterminds Stories

Anju Yadav’s story is one of determination and transformation. Born in 1988 in Dulera, a small village in Haryana, she was one of four sisters in a family where education and opportunities were limited. Her father, a farmer who also ran a small shop, provided for the family with what he had, but life in the village imposed its own restrictions. Anju’s early years were shaped by simplicity, hard work, and societal norms that often restrict women from pursuing their ambitions. In a conversation with Indian Masterminds, Anju Yadav shared her journey in detail.

BREAKING FREE FROM A LIFE OF LIMITATIONS

Married in 2009, Anju’s life took a turn that tested her spirit. At the wedding ceremony, she was told that her husband held a government job—a promise that turned out to be false. Despite this, life moved on, and in 2012, she became a mother to a son. With the responsibilities of motherhood and a marriage built on deception, Anju faced challenges that could have easily crushed her dreams.

Yet, she refused to let circumstances define her. She realised that for her son’s future and her own life, she needed to make a decisive change. Returning to her studies was not easy. It meant moving back to her parents’ home, where societal pressures and family opposition added to her struggles. Threats, taunts, and constant harassment became part of her daily life. “They said we won’t take you out of the house; you and your son should stay there,” she recalls.

Faced with limited options—remaining at home, continuing the farm work she was already involved in, or pursuing education—Anju chose the path that promised growth. She decided to study, to prepare for a future that she could control, and to create opportunities for herself and her child.

THE FIRST STEPS TOWARD INDEPENDENCE

Anju’s initial efforts were modest but significant. With no financial independence, she relied on her father’s support to cover her educational needs. She began her career in teaching, a field that provided stability while allowing her to rebuild her life. In 2016, she joined Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Madhya Pradesh. Over the next few years, she continued teaching in Rajasthan and then Delhi, each step bringing her closer to her larger ambitions.

Despite the progress, Anju’s journey was far from easy. Financial constraints, limited guidance, and societal pressure tested her resolve. The long hours of study, preparation for exams, and care for her son required immense focus and self-discipline. Even so, she remained steadfast, driven by the belief that education was her most powerful tool to create change.

In 2021, a tragic event marked a turning point. Just twelve days after her husband’s death, Anju made a decision that few could have imagined. She applied for the Rajasthan Administrative Service (RAS) exam under the widow quota, facing grief alongside the daunting challenge of a competitive examination. Many would have paused, doubting their ability to continue. Anju pressed forward, turning her personal loss into motivation.

REACHING FOR THE KHAKI UNIFORM

Her determination bore fruit in September 2025 when Anju Yadav attended her passing-out parade as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DYSP) in the Rajasthan Police Service (RPS). Donning the khaki uniform symbolised far more than a career achievement—it represented autonomy, empowerment, and the culmination of years of effort against formidable odds.

Anju’s father was overwhelmed with joy when she cleared the exam. After seeing his daughter face innumerable obstacles and challenges without support, he felt a profound sense of pride. For Anju, the achievement was not just personal; it was about creating the ability to help others. “Now I will be able to help women like me,” she says. Her journey from a confined household to the authority of a police officer embodies what can be achieved when determination meets opportunity.

The timeline of her progress underscores her steady growth:

2016: Teacher at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Madhya Pradesh
2018: Government school teacher, Rajasthan
2019: Government school teacher, Delhi
2024: Selected as RPS Officer (DYSP)

Anju’s words reflect her philosophy; in an exclusive conversation with Indian Masterminds, she shared, “education is more than a means to employment; it is a key to autonomy and decision-making. Financial independence is essential for women, particularly those from marginalised or rural backgrounds. For a woman constrained by social limitations, the ability to earn a living, make decisions, and assert her voice can transform her life entirely.”

EMPOWERMENT AND FREEDOM

For Anju, freedom is not abstract—it is a tangible component of life. She explains, “for a woman confined to a home, empowerment begins with small, meaningful liberties: wearing what she chooses, eating what she wants, speaking her mind, and being heard.” But as she stepped into professional life and attained the position of DYSP, empowerment took on a deeper meaning. She now holds the power to influence change, to help women who have faced struggles similar to hers, and to guide those who lack the support she once needed.

Anju emphasises the importance of internal resolve. While speaking with Indian Masterminds, she shared advice for single mothers and women facing setbacks: start with a clear decision about what you want to achieve. Combine that with passion and motivation, drawn from family, personal goals, or the desire to change circumstances. “Never underestimate yourself. There is no age limit to start something new—you can begin anytime,” Anju says.

Her story challenges societal assumptions about gender, age, and circumstance. From living “within four walls” to commanding a position of authority, Anju’s journey demonstrates that barriers are often self-imposed or externally reinforced but never insurmountable.

A MESSAGE FOR WOMAN EVERYWHERE

Anju Yadav’s story is a powerful example for women everywhere, especially those who feel confined by circumstances or defeated by life’s challenges. She shows that it is possible to transform adversity into opportunity, grief into motivation, and limitation into empowerment.

For single mothers, women in rural areas, or those facing social constraints, her advice is simple yet profound: decide what you want, pursue it with passion, and never underestimate your potential. Freedom and empowerment are attainable when one combines self-belief with practical effort.
