Madhya Pradesh’s Burhanpur became the first in the country to be certified as ‘Har Ghar Jal’ district under the Jal Jeevan Mission launched by the central government on August 15, 2019. It is now the only district in the country where all its villages (254 in total) have declared themselves as ‘Har Ghar Jal village’ through a resolution passed by the Gram Sabhas, implying that every household there has now access to safe drinking water. Today, we bring to you Burhanpur’s success story.

Back in 2019 when the mission was initiated in August, it was noted that only 37 per cent of the households in the district have access to clean and safe drinking water. The other 440 public institutions include 167 gram panchayats, 50 healthcare centres, 109 community centres, 45 ashramshalas, 2 community toilets, and 67 other government offices.
