IRAS officer Ananth Rupanagudi has shared on social media medium X some information on railway history. The railway bureaucrat wrote that it was the Sind & Punjab Railway company that laid the line from Multan to Lahore between 1859-1865. The line runs nearly straight for 219 miles connecting the two cities, with 114 miles of it being totally straight.
He further informed that “the steepest gradient was 1 in 600, and only 9 small bridges were needed, 6 of which were built within 5 miles of Lahore.”
Very soon, Amritsar was connected with Lahore, and the contract to connect Amritsar with Ghaziabad (303 miles) with a rail line was given in 1865.
#DidYouKnow The Sind & Punjab Railway company laid the line from Multan to Lahore which was probably very unique. Constructed between 1859 and 1865, it runs nearly straight for 219 miles connecting the two cities, and a length of 114 miles is absolutely straight. #IndianRailways
