Mother Pods: Creating Safe Spaces for Mothers

The Gangtok District Administration introduces "Mother Pods," providing safe, private spaces for breastfeeding mothers, and addressing public infrastructure gaps.
Indian Masterminds Stories

In an innovative move aimed at creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for mothers, the Gangtok District Administration, in collaboration with leading pharmaceutical companies such as Sun Pharma, Glenmark, and NHPC, has introduced “Mother Pods” across the district. These pods provide safe, private, and convenient spaces for breastfeeding mothers, addressing a critical gap in public infrastructure.

In an exclusive interview with Indian Masterminds, IAS officer Tushar G. Nikhare, DC Gangtok, and IAS G L Meena, SDM, Gangtok shared about mother pods in detail.

A Visionary Initiative

The installation of Mother Pods is a pioneering step, championed by the Gangtok District Administration under the leadership of District Collector Tushar G. Nikhare. The project seeks to ensure that mothers have access to secure environments where they can comfortably breastfeed their infants while out in public spaces.

“The well-being of our community is a top priority, and this initiative reflects our commitment to supporting mothers and infants. By providing these safe spaces, we are not only addressing a practical need but also raising awareness about the importance of breastfeeding,” said Tushar G. Nikhare.

Project objectives and locations

The primary objectives of this project include:

  1.  Providing a Secure Environment: Ensuring that mothers have a private space to breastfeed, free from the public eye, and in a comfortable setting.
  2.  Raising Awareness: Highlighting the importance of breastfeeding and the need for supportive infrastructure in public spaces.
  3.  Offering Additional Support: Including facilities for cleanliness and changing clothing for infants within the pods.

The Mother Pods have been strategically installed in key locations across Gangtok District to maximize accessibility and convenience:

  • MG Marg: A popular shopping and pedestrian area frequented by both locals and tourists.
  • Lall Market: A bustling marketplace essential for daily shopping needs.
  • District Administrative Premises: Ensuring accessibility for mothers visiting the district office for various administrative purposes.
  • Hanuman Tok: A well-known religious and tourist site often visited by families.
  • Singtam Bazar: A key market area serving a large section of the local population.

These locations were chosen carefully to ensure that mothers who might find themselves in these areas have easy access to the pods.

Community Response and Future Plans

The response to the Mother Pods has been overwhelmingly positive. The Gangtok Municipal Corporation, responsible for the maintenance of the pods, ensures that they are kept in optimal condition. The pods are regularly cleaned, closed at night, and reopened in the morning, making them accessible to mothers throughout the day until 10:00 PM. For added security, CCTV cameras have been installed outside the pods, ensuring that only mothers and authorized individuals have access.

SDM Gangtok GL Meena

GL Meena, the SDM of Gangtok, shared, “The acceptance of these pods has been remarkable, reflecting the progressive mindset of our community. We are closely monitoring the response and are optimistic about expanding the services offered in the pods, such as basic health services and sanitary facilities. This is just the beginning, and we hope this initiative gets replicated in other districts as well.”

The societal dynamics in Northeast India, particularly in Sikkim, have played a significant role in the initiative’s success. The community has embraced the pods, recognizing the need for such infrastructure. The positive response from companies, society, ministers, and MLAs has further encouraged the administration to explore additional services and potential expansions.

A Forward-Thinking Approach

“This initiative can be compared to similar efforts in other states, but what sets it apart is the comprehensive approach and the community’s enthusiastic response. By addressing a critical need, we have not only provided practical support to mothers but also set a precedent for other districts and states to follow,” Mr. Nikhare said.

All Mother Pods have been successfully installed at their designated locations, and the Gangtok District Administration is preparing for the official inauguration of the project on Independence Day, 15th August, with the Chief Minister presiding over the ceremony. This significant event will mark the beginning of a new chapter in public infrastructure development, one that prioritizes the needs of mothers and infants.
