The IFS Officer Defending India’s Wildlife with Unyielding Determination

Vanjulavalli Sridhar, an IFS officer, has fearlessly stood against poaching, illegal wildlife trade, and gender discrimination throughout her career, exemplifying unwavering determination in protecting India's natural heritage.
Indian Masterminds Stories

Born in Salem, Tamil Nadu, in 1989 to a family of doctors, Vanjulavalli Sridhar was destined for a different path. Her love for nature and wildlife, nurtured through childhood visits to wildlife sanctuaries, propelled her into a career as an Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer. A woman of immense determination, she has spent her life protecting India’s natural heritage, undeterred by the challenges she faces along the way.

Early Life and The Call of the Wild

From a young age, Vanjulavalli’s connection to the wild was clear. Unlike other children of doctors, who might gravitate toward the family profession, Vanjulavalli found herself enchanted by forests, wildlife, and the thrill of conservation. Childhood memories, like scrubbing elephants with monkey bread tree fruit in the Mudumalai forests or using her parents’ hospital ambulance to rescue animals, foreshadowed the remarkable journey ahead.

Her academic journey took her from a B.Sc. in Forestry from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) to a Master’s in Wildlife Biology and Conservation at the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) in Bengaluru. Yet, Vanjulavalli’s ambition went beyond just studying wildlife; she yearned for the power to enact real change.

In a conversation with Indian Masterminds, “I was introduced to top experts at NCBS, and while their knowledge was immense, I understood that real change requires authority. Even small actions can have a big impact. That’s why I joined the IFS, driven by my passion for wildlife and conservation. Since then, I’ve lived by a single principle: the solutions are straightforward, and the rules are in place, but people make things complicated. By keeping this in mind, meaningful change becomes achievable.”

Rising Through the Ranks of the IFS

After joining the prestigious IFS in 2014, Vanjulavalli was posted to Mayabunder in the Andaman Islands, where she served as Divisional Forest Officer (DFO). It was here that she first made a name for herself by mobilizing resources during Cyclone Vardah, which devastated the islands in 2016. Despite her lack of experience, she quickly became known for her level-headed leadership during this crisis.

Her tenure in Baratang (2017-2019) further cemented her reputation. There, she stood firm against violations of the Forest Conservation Act, 1980, when an infrastructure project overstepped its clearances. Despite external pressure from politicians, tour operators, and even her department, Vanjulavalli proved unyielding, shutting down illegal activities and demanding compensation in the form of replanting trees.

Defender of Forests and Wildlife

In both the Andaman Islands and Puducherry, where she currently serves as Deputy Conservator of Forests, Vanjulavalli has fought against poaching, illegal hunting, and wildlife trade. The Narikurava tribal communities in Puducherry, for instance, have long relied on hunting for sustenance. Yet, Vanjulavalli faced the difficult challenge of changing mindsets, asserting that illegal hunting is not a necessity but a conscious choice driven by economic gain.

Her work on the ground in Mayabunder showcased her dedication to protecting wildlife, even when personal circumstances could have made her retreat. In a dramatic turn, while pregnant with her first child and about to take maternity leave, Vanjulavalli led an investigation into the illegal poaching of deer meat being smuggled aboard a passenger ship headed for Kolkata. Despite threats and immense pressure, she and her team successfully stopped the smuggling operation and had the crew arrested.

Against the Tide: Battling Gender Discrimination

Throughout her career, Vanjulavalli Sridhar has not only faced the challenges of conserving wildlife but also the ingrained gender bias in a male-dominated field. Often the only woman at the table, Vanjulavalli has learned to fight for her place. As a mother of two, she has had to balance family life with her demanding job. Yet, far from being deterred, she believes her resilience is stronger than ever.

She speaks passionately about standing up against the notion that honesty and integrity are roadblocks in administrative positions: “Solutions are simple, rules exist, it’s people who complicate things.” Her unwavering belief in the power of doing what is right, even when it ruffles feathers, has been the hallmark of her leadership.

A Life on Her Terms

Outside of her career, Vanjulavalli is a woman of diverse talents. A trained Bharatanatyam dancer, she never misses a chance to perform. She’s also a passionate artist, winning national contests for her painting. Perhaps most dramatically, she enjoys riding her Avenger cruiser motorcycle through both the lush rainforests of the Andamans and the urban streets of Puducherry, a symbol of her independence and refusal to conform.
