“A Nation That Forgets Its Defenders Will Itself Be Forgotten” – Calvin Coolidge
In a time when swift action and seamless coordination can be the deciding factor in national security operations, one officer stood out for his commitment, efficiency, and deep sense of duty. IRTS officer J Sanjay Kumar, a 2016 batch officer currently serving as Senior Divisional Operations Manager (Coaching) in the Jhansi Division, has been formally commended by the Chief of the Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, for his crucial role in Operation Sindoor – a high-priority national mission that demanded nothing short of perfection.
Recognised among a select group of 16 railway officers across India, Sanjay Kumar’s name now resonates not only within the Indian Railways but also with the highest echelons of the Indian Army. His dedication and prompt action during the operation have set a “new benchmark in civil-military cooperation,” as stated in the official appreciation letter from the Army Chief.
Indian Masterminds spoke with Mr Sanjay Kumar to learn more about the award, the appreciation, and his contribution. He said, “I am glad to share that I have received a letter of appreciation from the Chief of the Indian Army, General Upendra Dwivedi Sir, for my contribution to Operation Sindoor, along with 12 other IRTS officers across India. In the end, the credit belongs to the team.”

Operation Sindoor: A Testament to Civil-Military Synergy
Operation Sindoor was not just another logistical exercise – it was a critical military movement requiring precise coordination and time-bound delivery. At the heart of this operation was the movement of ammunition from the Central Ammunition Depot (CAD) in Pulgaon, Maharashtra, a task that demanded extraordinary speed and coordination.
In a letter dated August 14, 2025, General Upendra Dwivedi lauded the Indian Railways for their “commendable work” during the operation, especially noting that a rake for ammunition transport was placed within just 24 hours of the Army’s request – an achievement rarely seen in military logistics.
“The level of coordination, synergy, and mutual trust witnessed has truly set a new benchmark in military-civil cooperation,” wrote General Dwivedi.
Amidst the many contributors, J Sanjay Kumar’s name was specifically highlighted, acknowledging his role in orchestrating seamless operations from his pivotal position in Jhansi – a division that includes Asia’s largest cantonment.
Mr Sanjay Kumar Speaks: “This Award Is Special Because We Did Something for the Nation”
Due to the confidential nature of many operational details, he did not reveal much about his contribution. However, Sanjay Kumar shared that he personally monitored train movements, ensured coordination across departments, and oversaw the swift mobilization of resources under high pressure.
“It was a time for the country when everyone wanted to contribute in some way. I feel proud that I had the opportunity to do something directly for national security,” he added.
Within 24 hours, rakes were placed, trains were loaded, and sensitive materials were on their way to their destination – an almost impossible feat turned into reality through dedicated teamwork and leadership.
Jhansi’s Role: A Strategic Nerve Centre
Why was Jhansi critical? As a historic and strategic railway division with direct links to several borders and cantonments, Jhansi played a central role in facilitating troop and ammunition movements. Mr Sanjay Kumar ensured that every train under his watch departed without delay, operating with military-level precision.
His leadership was especially pivotal because of the region’s proximity to important military zones and the sheer scale of operations that had to be coordinated across zones, divisions, and ministries.
Beyond Operations: Sanjay Kumar, The Green Warrior of Indian Railways
While the award for Operation Sindoor rightfully places Kumar in the national spotlight, it is not his first time making a difference.
Originally from Tamil Nadu, Sanjay Kumar is also widely recognised for his environmental stewardship across Indian Railways.
Wherever he’s posted, trees follow. Quite literally.
- He has planted over 22,000 trees across vacant railway land.
- Launched “Gift a Tree” and “Plant 5 on Your Birthday” campaigns.
- Transformed 150 stations in the Jhansi Division by planting native fruit trees.
- Promotes local biodiversity by planting native species rather than decorative non-natives.
His green initiatives have become a model for sustainable railway development, seamlessly combining ecological responsibility with railway efficiency.
A Role Model for Modern India
J Sanjay Kumar is more than an efficient railway officer – he is a symbol of the new India: capable, committed, and conscious. Whether it’s responding to military emergencies or greening up railway stations, his approach is always grounded in integrity and purpose.
“Railways has always stood by the Army during times of national need. We were only doing our duty – and doing it well,” he remarked, adding with a smile, “But yes, getting appreciated by the Chief of the Army Staff himself – that’s something I will always cherish.”
Final Word
As India continues to invest in stronger civil-military ties and environmental sustainability, officers like J Sanjay Kumar are leading the way – not just through policy, but through direct action on the ground. His dual legacy in defence logistics and green transformation is already inspiring the next generation of railway officers.
Indeed, for a man who moves both armies and ecosystems – recognition was not just deserved, but inevitable.
