The term “Income Tax Department” is not so strange. The word “raids” immediately comes to mind when you hear about income taxes. Numerous movies have been made that glorify and showcase their labor. Does the real world vary from the movies? Who better to convey this than an officer who has participated in numerous such investigations around the nation and is an IRS officer himself?
Through his videos, that officer has now introduced the public to the world of income tax and its officials. We are talking about “Operation Moonlight,” the most recent film that veteran IRS officer turned director Mr. Sudhanshu Shekhar Jha has directed. At the moment, Mr. Jha is the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax for the city of Jaipur, Rajasthan. This officer is highly passionate about the arts and movies, and he has a multifaceted personality. He has made more than 250 films since entering the service, some of which have been for the department. He also has a few commercial releases, such as “Wedding Anniversary,” starring Mahi Gill and Nana Patekar.
But because “Operation Moonlight,” his most recent picture, is about the workings of the IT department and features department officers supporting the cast, it holds a particular place in his filmography. Gyanendra Tripathi, Govind Pandey, Nishank Verma, and Irina Garg, the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax in Jaipur, are among the prominent cast members.
On March 28, the film was shown at Raj Mandir Cinema in Jaipur. Since it was Ms. Garg’s final project, it took on extra significance.
Indian Masterminds exclusively attended the event held in Jaipur, where Mr. Jha stated, “The movie is really significant to me because I had the opportunity to work with the geniuses in our department. I wanted to demonstrate what happens behind the scenes in the lives and careers of IRS officers. What types of problems do they confront, and how do they overcome them? With this film, I also wanted to show that we are ordinary human beings with duties and responsibilities that eventually lead to contributions to our society and economy.”
He also mentioned that he planned this event as a farewell to Ms. Garg because she was going to retire.
THE MAKING OF THE FILM
Mr. Jha is the writer and director of the film. “There is so much talent in our department,” he said in response to a question concerning the decision to cast his colleagues. “However, normal work takes up the majority of our time. I could not think of anyone who would have made a greater supporting cast in this scenario. They were able to experiment with their craft in this way. It was also a chance for relaxation and team building.”
In contrast to his previous films, this one was conceptualized and screened in just one month. The film lasts for approximately 45 minutes. It depicts the procedures for conducting any raid, the ground rules that must be observed, and the command hierarchy. “As shown in the movie, the offenders try their level best to get out of the spotlight. With good intelligence and leadership, we get the results. Not only in fiction but in reality too,” he smiled. The officer is eager to see what the future holds for him and is currently anticipating more opportunities to bring his stories to life on a large screen.
A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY
One of the lead actors in the film, Ms. Irina Garg, was genuinely taken aback by the chance. She expressed her gratitude to Mr. Jha for giving her the opportunity and self-assurance to play her part on camera. “Acting in a movie, was not even on my bucket list. I am really glad that Mr. Jha thought of this and brought us all together. It was a really fun and enriching experience. I couldn’t have asked for a better send-off”, added Ms. Garg.
She further underlined that the film gives insight into the lives of IRS officers and is based on actual occurrences. “We are a set of smart people and do important and sometimes impossible things. The one thing that sets us apart from other services is that we are ‘Time bounds’, she concluded.
“Operation Moonlight” stands as a significant cinematic achievement, not just for its portrayal of the inner workings of the Income Tax Department but also for the collaboration and dedication of its team, led by IRS officer turned director Mr. Sudhanshu Shekhar Jha. Through this film, viewers gain a glimpse into the challenges and triumphs faced by IRS officers, highlighting their crucial role in society. The film’s timely production and insightful narrative reflect Mr. Jha’s commitment to showcasing the human side of tax enforcement, bridging the gap between fiction and reality. As “Operation Moonlight” illuminates the complexities and responsibilities of IRS officers, it also shines a spotlight on their unwavering dedication to their duties, making it a must-watch for audiences interested in the behind-the-scenes dynamics of tax enforcement.
