A Special 95 team has been formed in Nagpur by the municipal corporation that will ensure the city remains clean, healthy and beautiful, holding up a yardstick to the other cities of Maharashtra. The team comprising of 95 men as the name suggests, is known officially as the Smart Swachhata Team (SST). They are seen in operation in the city streets from 6 am to 2 pm, tackling the cleanliness and sanitation with a vengeance.

SPECIAL 95 TEAM

Special 95 was the idea of Municipal Commissioner of Nagpur, IAS officer Radhakrishnan B. NMC officials told media that the motive behind forming this team was not just to improve the city’s ranking in the Swachh Bharat mission survey, but to enhance the overall cleanliness and sanitation of their city.

After recruiting 180 employees on compensatory ground, NMC recently formed a special team of 95 from amongst them. It was the solid waste management department that formed a separate team of 95 male workers for sanitation work in the city.

This team will not only clean the roads but also remove mud and the overgrown bushes on the sides.

SMART SWACHCHTA TEAM

Before the formation of the Special 95 team, there wasn’t any other team that was looking after such work, neither there was any such mechanism to hear out the grievances of the public about the overgrowth of wild grasses and the accumulating filth. Now, the Smart Swachhata Team (SST) is resolving all such public complaints.

The city roads have a length of approximately 4,000 km, and till now, the Special 95 team has completed work on them to quite an extent. This includes Hingna Road, Amravati Road and Katol Road. The team will now focus on roads like the Katol road, Hingna road, Amravati Road, North Ambazari, South Ambazari, Wardha road, etc.

SANITARY WORKERS’ ROLES

The roles of the sanitary workers are to clean, sweep and remove mud accumulated alongside the median, footpath, road dividers, chambers, and inlets of the rainwater networks. While other teams’ job is to collect the garbage, lift, and load it, especially the mud, weed and grass, into the provided trucks. By dividing the work in this way, the cleanliness campaign is being implemented in an organised manner by the municipal corporation.

WASTE COLLECTION

According to data released by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s solid waste management department, the sanitation workers daily collect a total of 100 metric ton of waste from the Nagpur streets. The city generates a total of 1,200 metric ton of garbage on a daily basis, out of which, the street generates 100 metric ton daily.

FUTURE PLAN

However, it seems the Special 95 team will soon have a change of name, as NMC officials revealed that they are planning to add around 200 more sanitary workers to it. In that case, we will have to go by its other name, Smart Swachhata Team (SST), only.
