In a world where dreams and duty often collide, IFS officer Sujoy Banerjee found himself torn between two passions: the world of music and the call of the wild. An accomplished singer with a voice that could fill concert halls, Sujoy once imagined a life under the stage lights. He even recorded his songs, dreaming of an audience enchanted by his melodies. But fate had a different path in mind, one that would lead him not to concert venues but deep into the heart of India’s forests.
Today, Sujoy Banerjee stands among India’s foremost conservationists, an Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer from the 1987 batch with a career spanning nearly four decades. His journey began in Uttar Pradesh, where he quickly gained recognition for his deep knowledge, unyielding dedication, and profound love for the natural world. From that moment, his life was no longer about charting musical hits but protecting the earth’s oldest rhythms—the sounds of wildlife echoing through India’s forests.
Though his official work led him through roles in the Forest Department, WWF-India, Ballarpur Industries, and the Indian Institute of Forest Management, Sujoy never abandoned his love for music. Instead, he wove it into his conservation mission, using it to connect with people who might never set foot in a forest. His songs, which he continued recording, told stories of wilderness and wildlife protection, giving voice to the voiceless animals and landscapes that he spent his life defending.
Banerjee’s commitment goes beyond words; he is also a skilled photographer and a TEDx speaker, captivating audiences with his powerful stories from the field. One of his most unforgettable encounters came while tracking a tiger—a creature that crept so close he could feel its presence like a heartbeat in the mouth. “In those moments,” he recalled, “you realize that protecting these animals is not just a job—it’s a personal responsibility. Standing there, only a few feet away, you feel the pulse of the forest itself.”
Through his lens and lyrics, Banerjee offers glimpses into a world most people only read about. His photographs, celebrated in conservation circles, reveal the beauty, resilience, and raw power of India’s wildlife. And though his life may have taken him from the stage to the forest, he’s never let go of music. Today, Sujoy uses it to inspire others, performing songs about conservation whenever he has the chance, reminding us that his two passions were never in conflict—they were always intertwined, both fueling his life’s purpose.
In a conversation with Indian Masterminds, he shared his journey in music and then wildlife.
