Pursuing Dreams Against All Odds: The Inspiring Journey of Pouravi Gupta

Indian Masterminds Stories

Pouravi Gupta, a native of Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, bucked conventional expectations by daring to dream large despite the constraints of her small-town upbringing. In a community where a girl’s goals were often limited, she envisioned soaring to great heights, spurred by her teacher and parents’ constant support. Her mother and father who are educators instilled in her the conviction that no goal was too big, pushing her to pursue a career in the civil service.

A Twist in the Journey

Initially, Pouravi pursued aspirations of becoming a Chartered Accountant, opting for commerce in high school and even clearing the Common Proficiency Test (CPT). However, upon encountering friends who were either preparing for or had succeeded in civil service examinations, she underwent a transformative realization. Influenced by the journey of her uncle, an IRS officer, Pouravi’s ambition shifted towards the realm of civil services, motivated by the desire to bring honor to her family.

In her own words, Pouravi reflects on her family’s role in shaping her aspirations.  “Education held a paramount place in my family. My grandfather’s progressive ideals ensured that not only were my uncles and aunts provided with quality education, but they were also empowered to be independent. My family has consistently stood behind my decisions”, she said.

Navigating Challenges and Embracing Opportunities

Despite apprehensions about leaving her hometown, Pouravi embarked on a journey to Delhi for her undergraduate education, enrolling at Indraprastha College for Women to pursue a BA (Program). Adjusting to the bustling capital posed initial challenges, but with her parents’ encouragement and her father’s motivating words, Pouravi found the strength to persevere through moments of self-doubt.

Following her graduation, she embarked on her UPSC journey and enrolled in a coaching class. Despite her dedication, her initial attempts faced setbacks. In 2020, she fell short at the prelims due to inadequate preparation, primarily consumed by coaching commitments. In the subsequent year, she encountered difficulties with the CSAT. In 2022, the mains proved challenging, yet undeterred, she persisted. Finally, in 2023, she achieved success, securing AIR 213. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “Before my fourth attempt in UPSC CSE 2023, I pondered over my future and stability. However, recognizing my weaknesses early on instilled in me the belief that with diligent effort, success was indeed attainable.”
