Bihar is known for gifting the nation civil servants by the dozen almost every year, as so many candidates from this state clear UPSC CSE and even make it to the top of the list. And this year was no exception.
Indian Masterminds presents the story of one achiever from the state this year, who managed to get through the tough examination overcoming many challenges on the way. Alok Ranjan, who comes from Gorihari village of Roh block in Nawada district, bagged AIR 346 in UPSC CSE 2021, making his whole village proud.

Alok faced a lot of difficulties in his life, especially in terms of finances. but he managed to clear the UPSC exam in the seventh attempt. A celebratory mood now prevails in his village but no one is more happier than his parents who ardently hoped that one of their children would become a civil servant one day. And that day is finally here!

BACKGROUND

Alok is the son of teachers Naresh Prasad Yadav and Sushila Devi. He passed his 10th from Jeevan Deep Public School, Nawada and joined Inderprasth University to pursue B.Tech in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He started preparing for the UPSC exam soon after completing graduation in 2015.

His parents said in a media interview that despite being financially weak, they always wanted one of their children to appear for the UPSC exam and become a civil servant. Being teachers themselves, they believed that through hard work, anything can be achieved.

FINANCIAL ISSUES

Due to financial constraints, Alok faced problems in continuing his studies. His parents took no time in selling a big portion of their ancestral land to keep his studies on track.

The parents revealed that they faced financial issues again later on during Alok’s UPSC preparation and they had to again sell a plot of land in Nawada district to help Alok and keep the dream alive.

Alok’s mother said, “We still live in a rented house which we could have owned till now if it was not for Alok’s studies. However, as our dream was to see Alok as a civil servant, it became our top priority to help him in his studies.”

SUCCESS IN SEVENTH ATTEMPT

It took Alok, who started preparing for the exam in 2015, seven attempts to finally reach the destination which he and his family always dreamed of. He secured AIR 346 in CSE 2021 to make a place for himself in the civil service fraternity.

When the results were announced, Alok’s family and the whole village erupted in joy. And no wonder! It was a tough road for Alok and his family, but their sacrifices brought them the desired result in the end. All’s well that ends well, after all.
