If Tapan Deka is not given an extension as Director of Intelligence Bureau, the domestic intelligence agency of the country, it is likely that the agency may get new chief from outside the organisation. Deka, say those who know him, wants to settle down in Guwahati after retirement.
And it is also very much likely that Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma may like to use his services at the state level post retirement. There are many officers outside the IB who can be next chief of the agency as they all have prior experience of working in IB. Railway Protection Force chief Manoj Yadava, CRPF chief Anish Dayal Singh (both have had long stints in IB) and even two more officers who only few months back were posted outside IB – Rahul Rasgotra and Vivek Shrivastava – too are considered capable of handling the assignment.
Within IB, TV Ravichandran is also among those in reckoning but many with an ear to ground say if Deka is not given an extension there might be someone from the IB who will be next chief of the agency.
