Kochi: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), one of India’s leading integrated energy companies and a Fortune Global 500 firm, commemorated the Diamond Jubilee of its Kochi Refinery, celebrating 60 years of remarkable growth, technological advancement, and unwavering service to India’s energy sector.
The celebration, themed “Energising Lives”, reflected the refinery’s transformation from a modest venture to a key pillar of India’s energy infrastructure, while also unveiling its ambitious sustainability goals for the future.
From 1966 to 2025: A Journey of Growth and Excellence
Originally commissioned in 1966 as Cochin Refineries Limited in collaboration with Phillips Petroleum (USA), the Kochi Refinery has grown into one of BPCL’s three major refining hubs. From a capacity of just 50,000 barrels per day, it now boasts a throughput of 15.5 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA).
Kochi Refinery plays a critical role in fueling India’s economic engine, while significantly contributing to Kerala’s industrial development and employment landscape.
Inauguration Ceremony Highlights Commitment to Green Energy
The Diamond Jubilee celebrations were inaugurated by Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Tourism, Shri Suresh Gopi, who lit the ceremonial lamp and planted a sapling to symbolize the refinery’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Sustainability Milestones and Future Vision
Sanjay Khanna, Chairman and Director (Refineries), BPCL, highlighted the refinery’s robust Q1 performance and emphasized its focus on environmental stewardship. Notable achievements include:
- 20–25% reduction in raw water consumption
- Significant improvement in Energy Intensity Index (EII)
- Enhanced recycling through the RODM plant
- Optimization of cooling towers and conservation efforts
BPCL is actively developing new technologies and efficiency measures to support its long-term vision.
Expanding Product Portfolio & Petrochemical Integration
Kochi Refinery’s current portfolio includes –
- LPG, Naphtha, Petrol, Kerosene, Diesel, ATF
- Specialty chemicals like Propylene, Benzene, Toluene, and Food-Grade Hexane
In 2021, the Prime Minister dedicated the Propylene Derivative Petrochemical Project (PDPP) to the nation. Building on this, BPCL is now investing ₹5,044 crore in a new Polypropylene (PP) Unit, expected to meet rising domestic demand in packaging, household goods, and more.
Path to Net Zero and EV Infrastructure
BPCL has set an ambitious target to become a Net Zero Energy Company by 2040, covering Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. It is also scaling up its green footprint by expanding a 6,500+ strong EV charging network, in line with India’s clean mobility vision.
Additionally, the company continues to invest in CSR initiatives, including –
