State-run Coal India Limited (CIL) is set to launch 36 new coal projects in the next five years, as revealed by Minister for Coal G. Kishan Reddy in a written response to the Rajya Sabha. In addition, the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) plans to open seven new coal mines, while NLC India Limited (NLCIL) is set to develop two mines during the same period.

The minister informed the Upper House that the Ministry of Coal has allocated 175 coal blocks, out of which 65 have received mine opening permissions, and 54 are currently operational. These projects span across various states, contributing significantly to local economies and infrastructure.

Highlighting the benefits of coal mining, the minister noted that such projects generate both direct and indirect employment opportunities, promote socio-economic growth, and enhance infrastructure in surrounding areas. However, water consumption is expected to vary based on the project’s size, depth, and technology used. Water usage typically includes dust suppression and domestic purposes, for which a No Objection Certificate (NOC) is obtained from the Central Ground Water Authority based on detailed hydrogeological studies.

These initiatives underline the government’s commitment to strengthening the coal sector while adhering to regulatory norms.
