Policing is no longer limited to managing law and order. It has expanded its role, in the process trying to make a difference in people’s lives. With various initiatives and community policing, many police officers have presented the human face of police in public. The latest to join this growing list is the new Commissioner of Delhi Police Mr. Balaji Srivastava.

Bringing people closer to the police & projecting the police as people’s friend is Mr Srivastava’s top priority.

With this in mind, he has kick started the ‘Jan Sunwai’ programme, under which public hearing camps will be held at police stations of Delhi every Saturday between 4 pm and 6 pm. All Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) have been directed by the Commissioner to ensure speedy redressal of public grievances in these `Jan Sunwai’ sessions.

Direct disposal of complaints

Recently, Mr. Srivastava held his first Covid and Crime Review meeting after assuming charge, to take stock of the situation on ground and to outline his priorities in the run up to the Independence Day. During this meeting, he asked the city DCPs to take ‘Jan Sunwai’ seriously and make it their top priority.

When contacted, Delhi Police spokesperson Mr. Chinmay told Indian Masterminds, “Grievance redressal is a regular part of police system. However, sometimes it is given importance and sometimes it is side lined. Mr. Srivastava has made it a priority for all the fellow officers as this program helps the police to connect with people.. The people can now directly come to the senior police officials with their problems and then they will be given proper assistance”.

He was previously posted as DGP, Mizoram

‘All the people who come to the ‘Jan Sunwai’ need to be attended to and properly heard for appropriate action on their matters. ACPs of Sub-Divisions shall remain available during the notified public hearing time. It will remain a regular practice, in addition to day-to-day grievance redressal at the police stations”, Mr Srivastava directed in the video conference ‘Vimarsh,’ held in Conference Hall, Police Headquarters.

The Commissioner has also asked DCPs to exercise proper supervision over the functioning of Integrated Complaint Monitoring System (ICMS) to register grievances online or offline by the public. This, incidentally, has been an initiative of the vigilance wing of Delhi Police.

Implement Covid19 Appropriate Behaviour

The Police Commissioner has also asked the DCPs not to let their guard down for implementing Covid proper behaviour for the people. This has to be adhered to in all public places, he has stressed. The top cop has asked the officers to be on the alert in the wake of possible third wave of Covid-19.

Against the backdrop of reports of surging crowd in some prominent markets of Delhi, Mr Srivastava has directed the DCPs to seek pro-active involvement of the stake holders such as markets and resident welfare associations for implementation of Covid19 related guidelines.
