2015-batch IAS officer Richie Pandey, who is currently posted as District Magistrate, Jehanabad, Bihar, was recently in news for ticking off officers and staff of his office for wearing jeans and T-shirts during office hours and in official functions, and later issuing strict guidelines to wear only formal wear to maintain work ethics and office decorum. This was brought about by an officer turning up for an office meeting in casual wear. The DM was quick to notice it and wasted no time in bringing it to the notice of all.

FROWNING ON CASUAL DRESS IN OFFICE

It happened during the meeting of the officials with the education department. One of the officers got up to answer to a query, and the DM’s eyes fell on the casual T-shirt he was wearing.

Expressing his displeasure at this informal get-up, Mr. Pandey asked him whether he had come for jogging? He further gave strict instructions to his staff to maintain office decorum and introduce strict rules if necessary. Addressing everyone present, he advised all to come to the office in formal wear.

The officer pointed out that when he visits the block offices, it becomes difficult for him to figure out who is the government officer and who is from the public, because he sees everyone in casual wear. So, he felt that one should be able to distinguish a public servant from the rest of the crowd by the dress he or she is wearing. This would also help in maintaining discipline and the dignity of the office and rank. “We are not expecting much, just a formal shirt and pant, and discipline, during working hours,” he said.

STICKLER FOR OFFICE RULES

According to him, discipline and punctuality are of utmost importance to maintain good work ethics. The officers and staff should come to the office on time and leave the office on time, unless there is some urgent matters to attend. “Nobody should stay beyond the stipulated hours,” he said.

That’s why he has appealed to his office staff to come and leave on time, devote themselves to work during the office hours sincerely, and maintain the office decorum by wearing appropriate dresses to office and for official meetings.

ON THE SIDELINES

Besides being known as a sticker for rules, Mr. Pandey is also known for his singing. He has a melodious voice and has recorded many videos of his singing, which have gone viral on social media platforms. The IAS officer was seen singing a song with other officers during the Holi festival, when he was posted as District Development Commissioner (DDC) in Patna. In another video, he was seen singing a song during his farewell party at the IAS Training Centre in Mussoorie.
