On April 16, 2024, the UPSC Civil Services examination results were announced by the commission. The top 10 positions were primarily occupied by individuals with backgrounds from prestigious institutions such as IIT or NIT, those holding prominent government positions, or individuals currently undergoing IPS training.
Expressing concerns about these results and Hindi Medium Candidates, 2009 batch IAS officer of Chhattisgarh cadre, Mr Awanish Sharan, posted a message on April 21. Furthermore, he offers his advice for candidates preparing for the upcoming UPSC Preliminary Exam in 2024.
“The current state of Hindi medium performance in the Civil Services Examination has indeed become a cause for concern. It saddens me to witness such outcomes persisting over the past few years,” Mr Sharan posted on X.
“Observing these outcomes raises the question of whether Hindi medium candidates have reduced their efforts in studying or if there has been a decline in their capabilities,” he added.
In a long post on social media platform ‘X’, Mr Sharan highlighted many aspects of the recent results and busted the myths about Hindi Medium candidates.
He wrote, “For years, the argument persists that changes in the examination system create challenges for Hindi medium candidates. While initially, there were concerns about these changes affecting Hindi medium candidates, those who aspire for success approach each challenge with determination.
To claim that the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) discriminates against Hindi medium candidates is unfounded. The UPSC provides a standardized format and syllabus for all candidates, irrespective of language, eliminating any basis for discrimination.
However, the reality remains that Hindi medium candidates struggle to clear the preliminary examination, the first stage of the process. These are not personal opinions but reflections of data provided by the Union Public Service Commission.
While it’s acknowledged that Hindi medium candidates may receive lower marks in interviews, reaching the interview stage is crucial before addressing such concerns. The interview evaluates various aspects of a candidate’s personality, a topic for another discussion.
Allegations of bias at the preliminary examination level are baseless. The examination requires selecting correct options rather than language proficiency. Although there might be challenges with Hindi translation in the General Studies question paper, diligent preparation can overcome this hurdle.
Hindi medium candidates traditionally excel in components like History, Polity, Geography, and Economy in the General Studies Paper 1. Failure to leverage these strengths reveals our weaknesses, for which blaming others is unjustified.
It’s essential to distance oneself from negative coaching environments, particularly in places like Mukherjee Nagar, and seek inspiration from positive influences.”
