The government is nearing the completion of a framework for a state mining index, poised to become a valuable tool for stakeholders and streamline mining operations. According to Mines Secretary VL Kantha Rao, this index will not only enhance cooperative federalism but also foster healthy competition among states.
At a recent workshop held in New Delhi, attended by principal secretaries, directors, and officials from 26 states, discussions centered around finalizing the indicators and sub-indicators crucial for the index’s methodology. Following extensive consultations and feedback from states, the framework for the state mining index is expected to be ready by July 2024, with the actual ranking set to commence in April of the following year.
Mr. Kantha Rao emphasized that this index will offer stakeholders insights into various facets of conducting mining operations within a state, promoting transparency and efficiency. Additionally, he urged states to aid in data collection efforts by ensuring timely submission of statistical returns.
