Imagine a place where education for women was a distant dream. Now, picture a bold rebellion brewing in its heart, not with raised fists, but with textbooks and a thirst for knowledge. Intrigued? This is the story of ‘Nai Kiran’, a program in Nagpur that’s challenging the status quo and empowering women in a way no one thought possible.

Led by the enigmatic Saumya Sharma, an IAS officer with a fire in her belly, ‘Nai Kiran’ is more than just a class – it’s a secret society for the revolution of the mind. But how exactly is this program changing lives? And what makes Ms. Sharma’s approach so different? Join us as we delve into the inspiring tale of ‘Nai Kiran’ and discover how one leader’s audacity is lighting the path for a brighter future, one woman at a time.

OVERCOMING EDUCATIONAL BARRIERS

In Nagpur’s bustling heart, a silent struggle unfolds. Here, education, a birthright for many, feels like a distant dream for countless women. Some may never have stepped foot in a classroom, their childhood dreams snatched away. Others, forced to choose between societal pressures and textbooks, left their studies mid-flight, their ambitions left to gather dust in the corners of their minds.

This education gap isn’t just a blank space on a resume; it’s a gaping wound that perpetuates inequality, chipping away at the very foundation of a woman’s confidence and freedom. But wait, there’s a flicker of hope, a spark waiting to ignite a revolution.

NAI KIRAN: LIGHTING THE PATH

In the academic year 2023-24, under IAS officer Saumya Sharma’s leadership, Zilla Parishad Nagpur launched the ‘Nai Kiran’ program with a dual mission: first, to empower illiterate women to complete their Class 5 education, and second, to support those who dropped out earlier in completing their Class 10 education.

“We partnered with the Pratham Education Foundation, to provide a hope for education to the countless women across the district.”

MOBILIZING SUPPORT: COMMUNITY AND CORPORATE COLLABORATION

To bolster its impact, ‘Nai Kiran’ tapped into Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds from local giants like WCL and NTPC, enriching the program’s resources and outreach. This collaborative approach underscores the community’s commitment to empowering its own, ensuring sustainable growth and development.

FROM PILOT TO PROVINCE-WIDE EXPANSION

The initiative’s success story unfolds in phases. The pilot phase, launched in select blocks, showcased remarkable results: out of 367 enrolled women, 175 successfully passed their Class 10 exams—an impressive 86% success rate.

Buoyed by this achievement, the program expanded exponentially in its second phase, encompassing 325 villages across all 13 blocks of Nagpur district. Till now, over 5,029 women have enrolled themselves in the intiative, with the motivation to learn and complete their impending schooling.

EDUCATIONAL EMPOWERMENT IN ACTION

Enrollment efforts were bolstered by dedicated tutoring sessions conducted by school teachers, SHG volunteers, and Pratham representatives. Evening and online classes supplemented traditional learning methods, accommodating women’s diverse schedules and commitments.

“Regular reviews and community coordination conducted by our team ensured that every participant received personalized support on their educational journey,” the officer told Indian Masterminds.

EMPOWERING THROUGH EDUCATION

The impact of ‘Nai Kiran’ extends beyond academic achievement. Women who once grappled with illiteracy now proudly spell their names and read with newfound confidence.

The program’s success metrics speak volumes: an 85.74% pass rate for Class 5 and an outstanding 90.16% for Class 10 exams highlight the transformative power of education in these women’s lives.

CELEBRATING ACHIEVEMENTS: VOICES FROM THE COMMUNITY

Testimonials from program participants echo a chorus of empowerment and gratitude. Mrs. Pritilal Bhujade, from Khairi village, expresses her joy: “Attending the Nai Kiran literacy class daily was my routine. Today, after completing the exam, I felt an overwhelming sense of joy.”

Similarly, 36-year-old Gayatri Kushal Khede, a former 8th pass from the village shares, “My husband doesn’t live with me. My elder son is in class 10th and the younger one is in 8th. Nai Kiran has provided me with the opportunity to learn and stand on my feet. I have to keep my future in mind so that if tomorrow even if my sons throw me out of the house, I will have my education and job to fall back upon. Currently I am completing my class 10th and want to work in a bank after I am done with class 12th.”

LOOKING AHEAD: A VISION FOR TOMORROW

With resounding success in its wake, ‘Nai Kiran’ charts a bold course for the future. Ms. Sharma envisions a district where every woman, regardless of age or background, has access to quality education. Future plans include expanding the program to encompass every village in Nagpur, ensuring no woman is left behind in the journey towards literacy and empowerment.

Under Ms. Sharma’s steadfast leadership, the ‘Nai Kiran’ initiative has kindled hope, restored dignity, and unlocked limitless potential for women across the district. As the program continues to grow and evolve, it serves as a shining example of how education can break down barriers, uplift communities, and pave the way for a brighter, more equitable future.
