Recently, Mr. Ravi Agrawal (1988 batch IRS-IT officer), presently serving as a Member (Administration) of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), was appointed as the new Chairman of the CBDT, succeeding Mr. Nitin Gupta (1986-batch IRS-IT officer), whose extended tenure as Chairman ends on June 30th. Officer Gupta was appointed as the CBDT chief in June 2022 and was scheduled to retire in September 2023 but was given a nine-month extension until June.
Officer Agrawal is scheduled to retire in September but will continue his new designation on a “reappointment on contract basis” until June 30th, 2025, under the usual terms and conditions applicable to re-employed central government officers, in relaxation of the recruitment rules.
