The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change has announced a significant amendment to the guidelines governing the transfer and posting of Indian Forest Service (IFS) officers within the Joint AGMUT Cadre. The new directive, effective immediately, introduces a new classification system for Union Territories and states in the cadre.

Under the revised guidelines, the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh have been reclassified as ‘Hard Areas’ (Category B). This change follows the integration of the Jammu & Kashmir Cadre into the AGMUT Cadre, prompting a need for updated categorization.

The AGMUT Cadre has now been divided into two distinct categories:

Category A (Regular/Soft Areas): Includes Delhi, Goa, Union Territories of Chandigarh, Daman & Diu, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and Puducherry. These regions are considered more accessible and less challenging in terms of posting conditions.

Category B (Hard Areas): Comprises the State of Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Union Territories of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, as well as the newly designated Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. These areas are classified as harder due to their geographical and logistical challenges.

This amendment aims to streamline the management of IFS officers’ postings and transfers by clearly defining the conditions and expectations associated with each category. It also reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to address the unique challenges faced by officers working in more remote and demanding regions.
