The Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB) has recommended Ashok Chandra for the position of Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Punjab National Bank (PNB) after interviewing sixteen candidates.
Mr Chandra is currently serving as Executive Director (ED) at Canara Bank, a position he has held since November 21, 2022.
In a statement, FSIB noted that Chandra was chosen based on his performance during the interview, his extensive experience, and other relevant criteria. The final approval of this recommendation will be made by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Pending necessary clearances and approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), Chandra is set to succeed Atul Kumar Goel upon the completion of Goel’s term on December 31, 2024.
Chandra began his banking career in September 1991 with the erstwhile Corporation Bank as a probationary officer. He holds a master’s degree in economics and is a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers.
Over his career, he has led key banking operations in significant zones, including Varanasi and Delhi. His tenure at Canara Bank also provided him with extensive experience in global operations, notably during his time at the bank’s representative office in Dubai, UAE.
