Indian Railways Set to Launch ‘Super App’ in December to Revolutionize Passenger Services

Indian Masterminds Stories

Indian Railways is gearing up to launch a unified mobile application by December, aimed at consolidating a wide range of passenger services into a single platform. The “Super App,” developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), will serve as a comprehensive tool for booking tickets, tracking train schedules, ordering food, and accessing real-time travel information.

This app is intended to replace multiple existing official applications and simplify the experience for passengers. It will integrate with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and continue using IRCTC as the primary interface between passengers and Indian Railways. In addition to ticketing, the Super App will include services such as ticket booking and modification, e-catering, train tracking, and even seat and coach suggestions.

IRCTC sees this app as a new revenue stream, strengthening its existing ticketing monopoly. During the 2023-24 fiscal year, IRCTC recorded 45.3 crore online ticket bookings, accommodating over 80.25 crore passengers with e-tickets. With significant revenue generated from online ticketing—over 30% of IRCTC’s ₹4,270.18 crore revenue for the year—the introduction of the Super App is anticipated to further bolster earnings.

CRIS is developing the application with a budget below ₹100 crore, aiming to enhance the digital experience for India’s over 100 million railway passengers. The app’s seamless integration will also support private booking services that rely on IRCTC’s data and reinforce IRCTC’s role as a key player in the travel booking ecosystem.

The Super App’s launch aligns with Indian Railways’ broader efforts to modernise and enhance service quality. With this streamlined interface, passengers will have a one-stop solution, making it easier to plan, track, and enjoy their journeys.
