Ravi Kant’s story begins in Chandigarh, where he grew up in a family of engineers. He graduated in Civil Engineering from IIT Roorkee in 1983. During his time at India’s first engineering college, he won the Thomason Memorial Gold Medal for the Best Engineering Design Project and was honored with the Best Outgoing Student Award.
On the academic front, he excelled further with a GATE score of 99.33 percentile and secured All India Rank 4 in the 1983 Engineering Services Examination. His thirst for knowledge later led him to the University of Manchester, UK, where he completed a Master’s in Economics & Management with Distinction, specializing in “Globalization and the Management of International Trade: WTO and the Developing Countries.”
A STELLAR CAREER IN THE IAS
In 1985, Ravi Kant joined the IAS in his first attempt, a journey that would span 21 years in West Bengal. Among his key assignments in the IAS, Ravi Kant served as Collector and District Magistrate of Howrah, where he oversaw administrative and developmental functions of the district. He was also Project Director for the World Bank-assisted State Health Infrastructure Development Project, managing large-scale health initiatives.
As Member Secretary of the West Bengal Pollution Control Board, he spearheaded pioneering biomedical and industrial waste management projects. Additionally, he held the posts of Labour Commissioner and Secretary of Information Technology & Managing Director of the West Bengal Electronics Development Corporation, contributing to labor welfare policies and the state’s IT and electronics development.
TRAINED ACROSS CONTINENTS
He trained at prestigious institutions across India, the US, UK, Germany, Hong Kong, Cuba, and the Philippines, sharpening his expertise in governance, IT, and environmental management.
During his tenure as Member Secretary of the West Bengal Pollution Control Board, Ravi Kant pioneered Eastern India’s first Bio-Medical Waste Management Facility in Howrah.
“Hospitals were throwing toxic waste into streets and rivers. I realized closing them wasn’t enough. I needed a solution that treated the waste professionally,” he shared in an exclusive conversation with Indian Masterminds.
He also initiated Eastern India’s first Industrial Waste Management Facility at Haldia, creating a 75-acre PPP project that managed segregation, collection, treatment, and disposal of industrial waste, preventing rivers and land from being polluted. These projects earned him the Environment Excellence Award from West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee in 2007.
TRANSITION TO CORPORATE SECTOR
In 2006, Ravi Kant took voluntary retirement from IAS to follow his passion for sustainable waste management. He joined Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited, Hyderabad, India’s largest environmental management company, as Managing Director, leading projects across industrial, biomedical, and municipal waste sectors.
“Being in government helped me understand the regulatory challenges. In the corporate sector, I could now implement practical, large-scale solutions.”
Among his notable achievements was the establishment of India’s largest Municipal Solid Waste Project at Jawaharnagar, Hyderabad, designed to treat 8,000 tons of waste daily. The facility, which includes bio-mining, aerobic composting, RDF secured landfill, and a 19.8 MW Waste-to-Energy plant, has become a model for municipal waste management across India.
ACADEMIC AND CONSULTANCY CONTRIBUTIONS
Beyond operational leadership, Ravi Kant served as Director General of the Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad, imparting management and governance training to civil servants. Since 2016, he has been the Director of Voyants Solutions Private Limited, an infrastructure consulting firm with offices across India and abroad, advising on waste management, environmental planning, and municipal services.
LEGACY IN WASTE MANAGEMENT
Ravi Kant’s approach goes beyond engineering solutions; it’s about people, partnerships, and practical execution. His work emphasizes the role of public-private partnerships, stakeholder engagement, and sustainable planning:
“To ensure sustainable waste management, planning for the future has to start today. The seeds we sow now will grow into strong systems for generations,” he shared with Indian Masterminds.
From pioneering biomedical waste management in Howrah to leading India’s largest municipal solid waste facility, Ravi Kant’s career is a remarkable blend of administration, corporate leadership, and environmental innovation.
Ravi Kant’s journey, from IIT Roorkee to IAS service in West Bengal, and then to creating India’s largest municipal waste management system, is a vivid example of transforming expertise into impact. His work continues to inspire policymakers, engineers, and environmentalists, showing that innovation paired with commitment can reshape cities and communities sustainably.
