When IAS officer Anjali Rajoria of the 2015 batch envisioned Mission Drishti, the stakes couldn’t have been higher. For the tribal communities of Neemuch and the schoolchildren of Pratapgarh, this revolutionary initiative wasn’t just about addressing vision problems-it was about offering a brighter future filled with opportunities and dignity. With its innovative approach and a focus on collaboration, Mission Drishti has become a beacon of hope, transforming lives across the district.

A VISIONARY APPROACH TO EYE HEALTH

“Eye diseases often go unnoticed in children, affecting their education and quality of life. This program ensures early identification and treatment, promoting overall well-being,” said Ms. Rajoria to Indian Masterminds.

Mission Drishti targets tribal communities where poor living conditions and inadequate nutrition have made children especially vulnerable to eye diseases. The program’s success lies in its structured processes, which begin with comprehensive screenings conducted by trained professionals from Gomabai Netralaya and supported by Sightsavers.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Screening and Examination: Around 1,47,646 students across eight blocks were screened in a record 45 days.
  2. Diagnosis and Treatment: Children identified with vision issues were provided with spectacles (434 students), referred for advanced care (378 children), or underwent life-changing surgeries. The Chief Minister Chiranjeevi Health Insurance Scheme ensured all treatments were financially accessible.
  3. Follow-Up and Support: Continuous monitoring and support helped ensure treatments were effective and sustainable.
  4. Awareness Campaigns: Workshops and sessions in local languages raised awareness about eye health, encouraging participation from students, parents, and teachers alike.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES, CHANGING LIVES

Implementing Mission Drishti in tribal-dominated regions required overcoming skepticism and logistical hurdles.

Initially, community members hesitated to participate. “There was skepticism among parents, but consistent health education by teachers and medical staff gradually built trust and engagement,” explained Dr. Rajoria. The program’s culturally sensitive approach, which involved tribal leaders and community elders, was instrumental in fostering acceptance.

The district’s lack of eye care infrastructure posed another challenge. Before Mission Drishti, there was only one eye assistant at the district level. The program addressed this by:

  • Deploying mobile health units to remote areas.
  • Establishing eye care facilities at Community Health Centers (CHCs).
  • Providing transport support and incentives for healthcare staff.

EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES

The program’s impact extended beyond healthcare. With better vision, students experienced marked improvements in their academic performance. Teachers, too, benefited from training, enabling them to identify and address vision problems early. The initiative also introduced systematic eye checkups in schools, ensuring no child’s education suffered due to preventable vision issues.

“Mission Drishti is not merely about restoring eyesight; it is about restoring hope, dignity, and opportunity to thousands of children and their families across our district,” remarked Dr. Anjali Rajoria. “When we envisioned this mission, we aimed to ensure that no dream is dimmed because of poor eyesight.”

Key Achievements of Mission Drishti

  • Screening over 1,47,646 students within 45 days.
  • Distributing 434 spectacles and conducting hundreds of advanced treatments and surgeries.
  • Enhancing awareness about eye health among 145,455 students and their families.
  • Improving coordination with national initiatives like the National Programme for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment (NPCBVI).

A MODEL FOR THE FUTURE

Looking ahead, Mission Drishti plans to:

  • Scale Up: Cover more schools and students across the district.
  • Enhance Technology: Integrate advanced diagnostic tools for improved screening accuracy.
  • Strengthen Infrastructure: Appoint additional eye assistants and expand mobile clinics.
  • Build Partnerships: Collaborate with more organizations to amplify impact.

Through Mission Drishti, Dr. Rajoria and her team have ignited a brighter future for the children of Pratapgarh. The initiative’s success underscores the power of community-driven efforts to address systemic challenges.

“This mission is about creating a ripple effect,” Dr. Rajoria concluded. “Every child whose vision we restore becomes a story of hope and potential. Together, we are building a healthier, more empowered generation.”

Mission Drishti is more than an eye care initiative; it’s a testament to the transformative power of leadership, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to every child’s potential.
