While on the one hand, internet has made our lives very easy, on the other, it is bringing danger to our lives as well in the form of cyber crimes. These crimes, which are committed through phones, computers and laptops with the help of the internet, digital devices and worldwide web services, are causing distress and wrecking many lives. Online fraud or theft also falls in this category. It has become a problem for security and investigation agencies all over the world.

The Cyber Crime Unit of Haryana Police is no exception. But they are doing a great job of dealing with it effectively. They have saved thousands of people from getting their money looted by cyber thugs. According to data, the police has till now saved about Rs 1.50 crore of more than a thousand people in the last 7 months. Many cyber thugs have been put behind the bars. In last one year, more than Rs. 81 lakh have been recovered and more than 1800 complaints have been disposed of, most of which were complaints of refund or recovery.

The special thing is that the police are being able to help those people immediately, who just registered a complaint by dialing the cyber crime toll-free number – 1930. Due to this, the victim’s money gets frozen in the bank itself and after verification, returned to the victim’s account. Indian Masterminds interacted with IG, Haryana State Crime Record Bureau and Karnal Range, Mr. Satender Kumar Gupta, to know about the Haryana Police strategy for dealing with cyber criminals.

CURBING CYBER CRIMES

In view of the increasing cases of financial frauds, the Cyber Crime Cell of Haryana Police has asked the victims to report any cyber financial fraud on the toll-free number 1930. This new abridged version of National Helpline Number 1930 has replaced the existing helpline number 155260.

Speaking to Indian Masterminds, IPS offcer Satender Kumar Gupta said, “I think training is the main reason behind getting such good results. We have a special and dedicated cyber team. We constantly train our officers so that they remain technically updated. We take help from the best cyber crime experts. Because of this, the team remains fully updated about what is happening in the cyber sector. Apart from this, we have dedicated desk for cyber crime. And we are going to open dedicated cyber police stations in every district in the next one month.”

At present, there is a cyber police post in every district. On an average, every district in Haryana has 12 to 15 police stations. Every police station has a cyber desk and cyber-trained police officers are present at this desk.

On the criteria they follow to form cyber police teams, the officer said, “We select constables with better aptitude in the cyber team after giving them special training. For this, we also take help of the Department of Information Technology, Electronics & Communication, Haryana.”

HOW TO FILE COMPLAINT

He added that as people are becoming more aware, they are informing cyber police on time about any cyber crime. This year, from Janaury to March, Haryana police got more than 550 people’s calls to report cyber crimes.

Haryana Police started the toll-free number 1930 effectively from 29 September 2021. People can register their complaint on this number at any time. The victim will then receive the receipt number of the complaint by SMS and will be asked to submit the full details of the fraud on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal within 24 hours, using the receipt number.
