In the heart of rural India, where access to education and opportunities is often a distant dream, IRS officer Satyapal Singh Meena has pioneered a transformative concept known as ‘Utthan’ – an initiative under the ‘Soch Badlo Gaon Badlo’ umbrella – that is rewriting the narrative of rural development.
Through a multifaceted approach, ‘Soch Badlo Gaon Badlo’ is creating a positive impact on education, women’s empowerment, and community development in Rajasthan villages and beyond. Indian Masterminds exclusively spoke with the officer to understand more about the program.
UTTHAN BHAWAN: A RAY OF HOPE
At the heart of the Utthan endeavor is the remarkable ‘Utthan Bhawan’. This crowdfunding-funded institution has become a beacon of hope for hundreds of rural students seeking to break free from the constraints of restricted chances.
Within its walls, Utthan Coaching, Utthan Library, and a skill development center operate seamlessly, offering a lifeline to needy students, especially young girls whose education was derailed by early marriages.
“The goal is to engage youth in competitive exam preparation and to guide them through their educational journey. This will help them become more productive in life and deter them from engaging in anti-social behaviours,” shared Mr. Meena.
As of today, the project has roughly 30 libraries and four large coaching centers running in various areas. Anyone can come and study at these libraries, which include all basic study amenities such as computers and Wi-Fi.
UTTHHAN INFORMATION CENTRES
Mr. Meena has constructed Utthan information centers in Rajasthan villages, where he holds seminars and workshops to provide suitable exposure to young minds who are not in touch with the outside world.
“We invite notable individuals and motivators from major cities like Jaipur, Pune, and Delhi to visit the centers and interact with the kids. They inspire these young minds, particularly child brides who are compelled to discontinue their schooling after marrying yet are still eager to learn,” he told Indian Masterminds.
BAL SANSKAR KENDRAS
Recognizing the significance of instilling values and encouraging children to seek education from a young age, SBGB has established Bal Sanskar Kendras. These facilities nurture young minds by emphasizing the significance of education and personal development.
“We educate young children through the center using various activities, dramas, plays, skits, stories, and art. These activities will help instill positive attitudes and mindsets in children at a young age, ultimately determining their future,” Mr. Meena told Indian Masterminds.
EDUCATIONAL UPLIFTMENT
‘Utthan Bhawan’ is a beacon of educational advancement, presenting regular awareness and motivating seminars. Its principal purpose is to improve the educational level of rural students, many of whom lack the resources needed for quality learning.
“This initiative aims to reduce the dependence of rural youth on government jobs by providing them with the tools to compete in a competitive world,” shared the officer.
MANAS UTTHHAN
Beyond education, SBGB’s ‘Manas Utthan’ program promotes social and cultural activities. Villagers come together to engage in meditation, spiritual practices, and discussions on pressing social issues. This holistic approach contributes to the overall well-being of the community.
Under this, he welcomes important saints and social reformers on a weekly basis, such as Sri Govind ji, and organizes holistic activities for senior citizens and the general public.
“The programs assist senior citizens in staying connected to the world and giving them a sense of belonging. When their children leave the villages for better chances, these old souls are left with nothing to do, which is why we plan such activities and keep them active in the same.”
MULTIPURPOSE CENTRES
The IRS officer’s Utthhan centers or Bhawans serve as multipurpose centers that cater to everyone’s needs, from children to the elderly. In addition, the centers place a premium on cultural events in order to preserve their customs and ethnicity.
“In these centers, we have also held blood donation camps known as Raktdaan Mahadaan for the past five years. This has resulted in a significant shift in which people no longer dread donating blood and instead flock in enormous numbers to assist and support those in need,” stated the officer.
UTTHAN PATRIKA
The SBGB keeps the community informed and inspired through its annual publication, Utthan Patrika. This comprehensive book details the organization’s activities throughout the year, serving as a motivational guide for youth engaged in rural development. It also recognizes the tireless efforts of villagers committed to their own self-development.
“The best part about the centres is that through all of this, we have been able to channelize the energy of the unemployed youths who were looking for opportunities to shine,” he told Indian Masterminds.
FUTURE PLAN
The officer looks forward to establishing at least 50 Utthhan Centres in Rajasthan in the days to come. He wishes to make them a ‘symbol of development’, a place that brings positive change and better development to the tiny hamlets of the state.
SBGB’s Utthan initiative is a testament to the power of community-driven change. It brings hope and educational opportunities to rural areas while fostering values, empowerment, and holistic development. As this initiative continues to grow and evolve, it shines as a beacon of positive change in rural India, inspiring countless others to follow suit.
