“Civil Services Is My Passion, I can’t Get Bored With It”, Says AIR 12 Aniket Shandilya

Indian Masterminds Stories

If you have a clear objective in mind and are willing to put in the effort, nothing can stop you from succeeding. Aniket Shandilya, the UPSC CSE 2023 topper, stood by this philosophy. Even when he faced failure, he remained calm and worked harder. Finally, on his fifth attempt, he achieved the desired success.

Mr. Shandilya’s journey to securing AIR 12 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2023 is a testament to the power of perseverance and determination. Hailing from the humble town of Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, Shandilya’s path to success was anything but easy, marked by numerous trials and setbacks.

In an exclusive conversation with Indian Masterminds, this topper shared his journey of triumphing against all odds.

FINDING OUT HIS PASSION

Coming from a modest background, Shandilya drew strength from his parents, both academicians, who served as unwavering pillars of support throughout his journey. Despite facing many challenges, Shandilya remained resolute in his pursuit of excellence.

After completing his graduation, Shandilya achieved a commendable rank of AIR 1000 in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). However, he found himself at a crossroads, contemplating his future path. It was during this period of introspection that Shandilya realized his passion for civil services, a revelation he shared candidly with Indian Masterminds, stating, “I can’t be bored with the work that comes under the profile of an IAS officer. I can do this every day.”

Shandilya’s journey in the UPSC CSE was fraught with challenges. In his first attempt in 2019, although not fully prepared, he missed the cut-off by a narrow margin, which fueled his determination. With each subsequent attempt, he encountered new obstacles, from insufficient preparation to missteps in the choice of optional subjects.

“I gave my first two attempts at mechanical engineering. In my second attempt, I was not prepared for writing Mains. So, I went ahead with the same optional subject and couldn’t score well. I realised that it was my weak point and switched to sociology for my third attempt in 2021.” This decision turned out right as he score 218 but missed the final list with just few marks.

He was fully prepared now, but destiny wanted to test him again. In 2022, he couldn’t clear Prelims. He was disappointed, but soon he realized all the silly mistakes he had made in the examination. So, he gathered himself on the next day, he was on the job.

SECURING A JOB

In between his third and fourth attempts, he secured a job in the Ministry of Home Affairs

Despite the job, Shandilya remained steadfast in his pursuit of civil services, recognizing the importance of not becoming complacent. He emphasized the significance of perseverance, stating, “One can’t stop putting effort until they reach their goal.”

Shandilya’s unwavering dedication and resilience finally paid off in his fifth attempt in UPSC CSE 2023, as he secured an impressive AIR 12. Reflecting on his journey, Shandilya acknowledged the importance of taking risks and staying focused on one’s goals, regardless of the obstacles encountered along the way.

Aniket Shandilya’s success story serves as an inspiration to aspirants nationwide, reminding us that with unwavering determination and perseverance, no dream is beyond reach.
