From Bureaucrat to Bestseller: No Maths, No Jargon, Just Economics; IAS Gaurav Agrawal’s Unique Take on a Tough Subject

IAS Gaurav Agarwal’s book “India’s Economy” simplifies complex economic concepts with real-life examples, making it a valuable resource for UPSC aspirants and general readers alike. Now in its third edition, it's a bestseller.

Economics is generally considered a difficult subject. And more than that, people also consider it a boring subject. There are very few books that explain economics practically and talk about every aspect of it and make it easy.

But 2014 batch IAS officer and currently Jodhpur Collector IAS Gaurav Agrawal took the initiative to overcome these problems of the people and wrote a book on it, which is not only very useful for the common people but is also no less than a boon for the aspirants preparing for the country’s toughest examinations like UPSC.

Indian Masterminds interviewed Mr Agrawal to delve deeper into his book and the story behind it.

The Journey of the Book: From Concept to Bestseller
IAS Agrawal started working on the book in 2022, juggling his administrative duties with his passion for economics. It took him 8 to 10 months of dedicated effort, often writing in small time slots of just half an hour to an hour a day. The result was the first edition of his book in 2023, which became an instant bestseller on Amazon. Now, in 2025, the third edition of the book has been published, reflecting updates and additions to keep up with the evolving economic landscape.

Why This Book Stands Out
In a world full of technical jargon and complex theories, Mr Agrawal’s book comes as a breath of fresh air. The book, titled “India’s Economy”, is specifically written for those who have no academic background in economics. It uses real-world examples, illustrations, and storytelling techniques to explain otherwise challenging concepts.

He notably avoids complex mathematics, making the book suitable even for readers who may find numbers intimidating. From global economic trends to India’s economic structure, from the role of the Reserve Bank of India to the basics of inflation, GDP, and monetary policy, the book covers a wide range of topics in a simplified manner.

A Personal Commitment to Learning and Sharing
Mr Agrawal’s passion for economics began during his student life. As he said, “This has been my subject. I was preparing for it since my student days. Gradually, I developed a love for economy and economics and since then I was interested in it.” His deep personal interest led him to think of creating a resource that would serve future generations of students and UPSC aspirants.

Despite his busy schedule as a District Collector, he took out time to pursue his dream. In his words, “I have written this book not like a rabbit but like a tortoise. Slowly and steadily, I worked on it daily. Writing this book has been a pleasant and fulfilling experience.”

A Tool for Aspirants, A Resource for Citizens
While the book is highly beneficial for UPSC aspirants, it also serves as a handbook for any Indian citizen curious about how the economy works. By making economic concepts accessible, Gaurav aims to increase public awareness and understanding, which he believes is essential in a developing democracy like India.

To underline the importance of the book, the first copy was presented to Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra, symbolizing both the significance of the subject and the quality of the work.

A Legacy of Knowledge
This is not Mr Agrawal’s first book. With a track record of contributing to education and administration, he has previously authored another successful title. But “India’s Economy” stands out as a landmark contribution – a personal and professional blend of experience, expertise, and effort.

Each edition has seen additions and refinements, reflecting Gaurav’s commitment to keeping the book relevant and practical. The third edition in 2025 includes updated case studies and more visuals to aid comprehension.

Economics for Everyone
IAS Agrawal’s book proves that with the right intent and approach, no subject is too difficult to understand. In a country where economics is often perceived as a niche subject, he has made it reachable, readable, and relatable. His work stands as a milestone for aspirants, a resource for learners, and a beacon for officers who want to contribute beyond their routine roles.

His story is a reminder that when knowledge is shared with passion, it has the power to transform lives – one page at a time.
