The 1988 batch senior IPS officer Vijay Kumar will be new acting DGP of Uttar Pradesh, the head of the state police. The tenure of Acting DGP RK Vishwakarma, who was also a 1988 batch IPS officer, ends today.

IPS Vijay Kumar will retire in January 2024. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath issued the order of his appointment.

It is worth mentioning here that this time, it is discussed that after new DGP Vijay Kumar’s tenure, the name of permanent DGP will be considered.

The government has assigned IPS Vijay Kumar as DG Vigilance, DG CBCID as well as additional charge of Acting DGP.

Our sources said that the Chief Minister will soon send a proposal to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to make him the DGP of the state. In the last 13 months, Mr Kumar will be the third officer to become the acting DGP of UP.

With Vijay Kumar becoming the Acting DGP of the UP Police, the ongoing discussions regarding the posting of the DGP have come to an end since last one month.

It started with the sudden removal of Mukul Goyal from the DGP’s chair on 12 May 2022. Mukul Goyal, who was to retire in February 2024, was removed by the Yogi government due to his lack of interest in the works related to the department and inaction. And then DG Intelligence Dr. Devendra Singh Chauhan was made the acting DGP.

When Dr. Devendra Singh Chauhan retired on March 31, the government appointed Dr. RK Vishwakarma as acting DGP. Even before his retirement, there was again discussion about the posting of a permanent DGP in UP.

But the state government did not send any panel to UPSC for the appointment of permanent DGP. So it was assumed that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has again made up his mind to appoint acting DGP in the state. Under which, on Wednesday, he gave his consent on the file to make Vijay Kumar the acting DGP.

Sources says that soon the proposal to make Vijay Kumar the DGP of the state will be sent to UPSC. However, Prashant Kumar, the special DGP of the state, is also in the race to be made the DGP.

Prashant Kumar, a 1990 batch IPS officer, is currently handling many other responsibilities including law and order. He is counted among the favorite officers of the Chief Minister.

CM also wants to see him on the DGP’s chair, as sources said.

For the time being, as long as no proposal is sent from the state government to the UPSC in this regard, till then Vijay Kumar will continue to be the acting DGP of UP.

Dr. Devendra Singh Chauhan has been posted as Acting DGP for the maximum period of eleven months. Now it will be interesting to see, whether Vijay Kumar will break his record of Acting DGP or he will soon become the permanent DGP of the state.

After the removal of former DGP Mukul Goyal, the DGP residence Tilak Marg is still lying vacant.
