New Delhi: The Government of India has appointed Akash Tripathi, a 1998-batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, as the Managing Director (MD) of Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) Limited, a central public sector undertaking under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved his appointment on Monday. Tripathi is currently serving as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Power, and will now take over SECI from MNRE Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi, who was holding additional charge following RP Gupta’s exit.
A Tech-Savvy Bureaucrat with Deep Administrative Experience
Tripathi brings a blend of technology-driven governance experience and sectoral knowledge. Before his stint in the Ministry of Power, he served in multiple high-impact roles including:
- Managing Director & CEO, Digital India Corporation (DIC)
- CEO, India Semiconductor Mission
- CEO, MyGov.in, the Government of India’s citizen engagement platform
In his cadre state, Madhya Pradesh, Tripathi worked extensively in domains such as e-governance, energy sector reforms, IT-enabled citizen services, and rural development. His tech-savvy reputation has been widely acknowledged, especially for using digital tools to streamline public service delivery and drive innovation in governance.
Strategic Appointment Amid India’s Clean Energy Push
Tripathi’s appointment comes at a crucial time as India races towards its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. SECI plays a central role in project development, competitive bidding, and investment facilitation in the solar and wind energy space.
As SECI MD, Tripathi will oversee:
- Expansion of solar parks and hybrid renewable projects
- Acceleration of green hydrogen and battery storage initiatives
- Scaling up public-private partnerships in renewables
- Strategic coordination with states and private investors to meet energy transition goals
Expected Impact
With Tripathi’s proven record in digital governance and energy sector leadership, his appointment is expected to strengthen SECI’s operational capacity, deepen innovation in project implementation, and enhance policy execution at scale.
His leadership comes at a time when India’s renewable ambitions are becoming central to global climate diplomacy, investment narratives, and domestic infrastructure goals.
