The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court in Deoria has fixed January 6 as the next date of hearing in the case involving former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur, who was arrested by the Lucknow Police in connection with an alleged land fraud dating back to 1999.
Court Orders Close Judicial Monitoring
During the hearing, the court directed close judicial supervision of the investigation and asked the investigating officer to submit a detailed report explaining the legality and necessity of Thakur’s arrest and remand. The investigating officer from Lucknow appeared before the court and was provided with documents filed by the defence.
Police Asked to Explain Grounds of Arrest
The court instructed the investigating officer to examine the defence submissions and clarify why Thakur was arrested when a complaint filed by the complainant’s wife was already under consideration in Lucknow. The officer has also been asked to specify what evidence was collected prior to the arrest and what circumstances justified custodial action.
Defence Challenges Arrest and Custody
Advocate Abhishek Sharma, appearing on behalf of Thakur, said the defence has questioned the arrest, remand and extension of custody, alleging procedural irregularities. The defence also argued that similar matters had been examined earlier and relevant documents were already available for consideration.
Allegations Linked to 1999 Posting in Deoria
The case relates to allegations that Thakur, while serving as Superintendent of Police in Deoria in 1999, misused his official position to help his wife, Nutan, fraudulently obtain an industrial plot from the District Industries Centre.
FIR Registered in Lucknow
The FIR was registered in September 2025 at Talkatora police station in Lucknow and includes charges of cheating, forgery, impersonation and criminal conspiracy. Thakur was arrested on December 11 and produced before the Deoria court
