Archana Varma, IAS officer and the Additional Secretary & Mission Director of the National Water Mission was recognized at the prestigious Jal Prahari Samman Samaroh 2024 for her exemplary contributions to water conservation and sustainable development initiatives in India.
In her keynote address, she emphasized the critical importance of water conservation in the face of increasing demand and climate change. Highlighting India’s challenges, she stated that the nation holds only 2.5% of the world’s geographical area but supports 18% of the global population and livestock. With finite freshwater resources, the water demand is projected to exceed availability by 2050, making efficient water management a national priority.
Varma also stressed the need for a balanced approach that ensures growth while protecting natural resources. She pointed out key factors leading to water scarcity in India, including excessive groundwater extraction—more than China and the USA combined—with 85% of it utilized in agriculture and industrial sectors.
She lauded the unsung heroes of water conservation, the “Jal Praharis,” who work with commitment and perseverance despite little recognition. Their efforts, she noted, are instrumental in addressing India’s water crisis.
Varma’s speech concluded with a call to action for greater community involvement in water conservation and sustainable development, urging all stakeholders to collaborate for a water-secure future.
