Kaziranga Mourns: Beloved Elephant Mohanmala Passes Away After Five Decades of Service

Kaziranga, Assam: Kaziranga National Park bid a heartfelt farewell to Mohanmala, its most beloved departmental elephant, who passed away peacefully due to old age. The emotional tribute video shared by Kaziranga’ X (formerly twitter) handle showcases the deep bond between the park’s frontline heroes and this gentle giant who had stood by them for over 50 years.

“Kaziranga bids farewell to its beloved departmental elephant Mohanmala, who passed away peacefully with old age. Part of Kaziranga family since 1970, she was a fearless flood-time saviour, anti-poaching ally & symbol of loyalty.”

Since 1970, Mohanmala had been a crucial member of Kaziranga’s forest team. She was more than just an elephant — she was a fearless protector. During Assam’s annual floods, Mohanmala played a lifesaving role, carrying stranded animals to safety.

Anti-Poaching Ally and Symbol of Loyalty

Mohanmala also stood shoulder to shoulder with forest guards in anti-poaching patrols, helping safeguard Kaziranga’s famed one-horned rhinos and other wildlife. Her loyalty and courage made her a symbol of the park’s resilience and spirit.
