New Delhi/Bengaluru: In a major move reflecting the gravity of the June 4 stampede at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, the Union government has formally approved the suspension of three senior IPS officers — Dayananda, Vikas Kumar, and Shekhar — for lapses in crowd control during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL victory celebrations.

The tragedy, which claimed 11 lives and left dozens injured, has led to nationwide outrage and triggered sharp criticism of law enforcement’s failure to manage the massive turnout.

Disciplinary Action Gets Central Nod

The suspension of the officers was initially recommended by the Karnataka government. On Friday, the Centre communicated its approval to the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR), officially backing the state’s move to hold the officers accountable.

In a significant directive, the Centre has also instructed the Karnataka government to initiate charge-sheeting proceedings against all three officers within 30 days — a step seen as reinforcing institutional accountability.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s Stern Remarks

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, during a high-level review meeting at the office of the Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG-IGP), lashed out at senior officers over intelligence failures and inadequate crowd management planning.

“I’ve been an MLA since 1983 and served as Chief Minister before, but never have I witnessed such a tragic and avoidable failure,” Siddaramaiah said.

While acknowledging that the decision to suspend senior IPS officers was a difficult one, he emphasized that lapses of this scale could not go unpunished. “It saddens me to take such steps, but lapses of this magnitude cannot be ignored,” he noted.

The Chief Minister also highlighted systemic inefficiencies in the law enforcement process, especially concerning the delays in filing charge sheets in criminal cases — a flaw he said must be urgently addressed.

Mounting Pressure After Public Outcry

Public pressure had been growing following the incident, with citizens, legal experts, and human rights groups calling for swift action against those responsible for the mismanagement. The stampede, one of the deadliest public safety failures in recent memory in Bengaluru, unfolded during what was intended to be a celebratory event for RCB fans after their IPL 2025 campaign.

Security arrangements at the stadium were reportedly overwhelmed by the unexpected surge in attendees, despite multiple intelligence inputs suggesting the possibility of overcrowding.

What Happens Next?

With the Centre’s directive, the next step will involve filing formal charge sheets against the suspended officers, a process that will be closely monitored both by the public and legal observers. The Karnataka government is expected to initiate departmental inquiries in parallel to judicial oversight mechanisms.
