Patna: In a significant move to modernize cremation facilities, the Bihar Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has approved the establishment of LPG (gas)-based crematoriums in six major cities: Patna, Gaya, Chhapra, Saharsa, Bhagalpur, and Begusarai. The decision was taken on Monday, following the approval of a proposal by the Urban Development and Housing Department.
Implementation by Isha Foundation
The project will be executed in collaboration with the Isha Foundation, Coimbatore. Each city will be allotted one acre of land to the foundation on a 33-year lease for a nominal token rent of just ₹1.
Benefits to Citizens
The introduction of gas-based crematoriums is expected to save both time and costs compared to traditional wood-based pyres. These modern facilities will also be environmentally friendly, significantly reducing smoke and pollution caused by burning wood. Residents will now have clean, safe, and efficient cremation services within their own cities.
A Major Relief for Local Communities
Cities like Patna and Gaya, which are major religious and spiritual hubs, along with Chhapra, Saharsa, Bhagalpur, and Begusarai, are expected to benefit greatly from the modern facilities. Until now, traditional cremation practices in these areas often faced challenges such as shortage of wood, limited space, and environmental concerns. The new LPG-based facilities aim to alleviate these problems and provide a dignified, hassle-free option for funeral rites.
Government Statement
The Bihar government has stated that, following Cabinet approval, the process of land allocation and construction will commence soon. Officials highlighted that this initiative is not only socially significant but also an important step towards environmental conservation.
