Patna: In a significant step towards rural development and sustainable energy, the Bihar government has approved an advance amount of ₹100 crore for the implementation of the “Mukhyamantri Gramin Solar Street Light Yojana.” The scheme aims to install solar-powered street lights across villages and towns, enhancing safety and encouraging economic activities after sunset.
Government’s Push for Rural Illumination
The Bihar cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, sanctioned the fund to illuminate the streets and intersections of rural areas. The solar street lights are expected to not only create a safer environment but also beautify the villages, promoting social and economic growth.
Boosting Nighttime Economic Activity
One of the key objectives of the scheme is to energize rural economies. By illuminating the streets, the government anticipates increased commercial activity after dark. Shopkeepers and small businesses will benefit from extended operating hours, creating a vibrant and safer community atmosphere at night.
Comprehensive Support for Rural Infrastructure
Alongside the solar street lighting project, the cabinet has also approved an advance payment of ₹594.56 crore to the Panchayati Raj Department. This amount is allocated for clearing outstanding electricity and water bills of Panchayat offices and to ensure smooth continuation of rural drinking water supply schemes under the Chief Minister Rural Drinking Water Nishchay Yojana.
Government’s Commitment to Rural Development
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has repeatedly emphasized that true development lies in empowering villages. Providing essential amenities like drinking water, electricity, and proper lighting remains the top priority of his administration. This solar street lighting initiative aligns with the broader vision of making Bihar’s rural landscape safer and more prosperous.
Looking Ahead
With the Mukhyamantri Gramin Solar Street Light Yojana set to roll out in the 2025-26 financial year, Bihar is poised to become a model for integrating renewable energy solutions with rural development. The government is optimistic that this initiative will usher in a new era of safety, convenience, and economic growth in villages across the state.
