Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) launched an intensive overnight cleanliness drive at Azad Maidan and surrounding areas. The operation involved over 1,000 sanitation workers working in three shifts, with more than 400 deployed in the night shift alone.
Comprehensive Sanitation Efforts
The drive included large-scale cleaning measures to restore hygiene in and around Azad Maidan. Officials arranged 450 portable toilet seats, including 100 newly added facilities. The Mumbai Fire Brigade installed a tower with 40 floodlights to ensure proper illumination during night operations.
Sanitation teams used suction machines and jet spray equipment to clean all toilet facilities. Around 2,000 garbage collection bins and dustbin bags were distributed across the site.
Ensuring Water and Medical Support
BMC arranged 25 water tankers, including mini tankers, to provide adequate drinking water for those present at the ground. A dedicated medical unit was also functional at the venue. On September 1, over 4,000 protestors availed medical assistance at the Azad Maidan medical camp.
Mechanical Cleaning and Waste Disposal
For road maintenance, mechanical cleaning was carried out using Skid Steer Loader (Bobcat) machines. Waste collected from the site was directly loaded into two mini compactors and one large compactor. Roads were thoroughly washed with water after garbage removal to ensure complete cleanliness.
Sustained Operations
The BMC stated that around 200 sanitation workers worked tirelessly from the night of September 2 to the morning of September 3 to restore the area fully. Officials emphasized that such efforts reflect the civic body’s commitment to maintaining hygiene during large gatherings.
