In a startling incident that has raised questions about internal security, Pune Police detained a man posing as an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer inside the city’s Police Commissionerate. The accused, identified as Mr. Sagar Waghmode, had been masquerading as an IPS officer for several years before being caught red-handed by a real Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).
The complaint in the case was filed by Mr. Bhavik Jitendra Shah, a 37-year-old resident of Ghorpadi Peth, who runs an event management business. Mr. Shah had known the accused for over three years and claimed that Waghmode frequently introduced himself as a serving IPS officer.
How the Impersonation Was Exposed
The incident took place on October 31, when Mr. Waghmode invited Mr. Shah to meet him at a metro station, boasting of his connections with senior government officials, including the Income Tax Commissioner, DCP Mr. Bhaji Bhakre, and ACP Ms. Sangeeta Alphonso. Later that day, Waghmode took Shah to the Pune Police Commissionerate, claiming that Zone 1 DCP Mr. Krushikesh Rawale was his batchmate.
However, as fate would have it, the real DCP Mr. Krushikesh Rawale (2019-batch IPS officer) appeared at the scene. Upon spotting Waghmode, Rawale immediately suspected foul play. His quick thinking prevented further deception — he alerted the Bund Garden Police Station, which swiftly took action.
Arrest and Investigation
Under the supervision of Senior Inspector Mr. Santosh Pandre, a police team detained Mr. Waghmode at the Commissionerate premises. The police registered a case and began a thorough investigation into how the impersonator managed to infiltrate the highly secure premises and interact with senior officers.
According to preliminary findings, Waghmode had been using a fake identification card to pose as an IPS officer and had been introducing himself to several prominent individuals in the city under this false identity. The police are now investigating whether he used his fake credentials to gain financial or professional advantages.
Departmental Response and Security Review
This unprecedented security lapse has triggered serious introspection within the Pune Police Department. Senior officials have initiated an internal review of identification verification protocols and visitor access procedures at the Commissionerate. The department is also evaluating the need for advanced ID verification systems to prevent similar incidents in the future.
A senior officer stated that such impersonations undermine the credibility of law enforcement agencies and highlighted the need for better inter-departmental coordination to verify officer credentials.
Larger Implications for Police Administration
The case has sent shockwaves across Maharashtra’s law enforcement circles. It underscores the importance of strict verification and monitoring systems within police institutions, especially as technological advancements make forgery of identity cards easier.
Experts believe that this incident could prompt wider reforms, including digital identity verification and biometric access control systems across police offices in the state.
