New Delhi: The inaugural edition of the Tri Services Academia Technology Symposium (T-SATS) was launched today at the Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the collaboration between India’s Armed Forces and the academic and research ecosystem. The event was inaugurated by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan and saw participation from top academic leaders and students from 62 premier institutions including IISc, IITs, IIITs, and private technology institutes.
A Convergence of Defence and Academia for Future Technologies
Addressing the gathering, General Chauhan highlighted the rapidly evolving nature of modern warfare, which is increasingly defined by the integration of kinetic and non-kinetic domains. He stressed the urgent need for advanced, integrated technological solutions tailored to meet future operational challenges. Emphasizing the vital role of academia, startups, and industry, the CDS called for a whole-of-nation approach to foster indigenous capabilities across weapons, platforms, networks, and doctrines. His vision is to propel India to the forefront of next-generation defence technologies through sustained innovation and collaboration.

Technology Exhibition and One-on-One Innovation Meetings
A major highlight of the symposium was the inauguration of a Technology Exhibition featuring 43 innovative projects developed by academic institutions. These exhibits were evaluated by experts from the three Services for their potential military applications. Promising projects will receive support for further research and development in partnership with the Armed Forces.
Further enriching the symposium were 95 structured one-on-one meetings between academic innovators and service representatives. These closed-door sessions provided a unique platform for researchers to present their ideas directly to defence stakeholders and receive guidance on transforming their innovations into practical military solutions. These interactions will continue on the second day of the symposium.
Strategic Partnerships and MOUs Signed
In line with its mission to foster long-term collaboration, the event saw the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with several leading academic institutions including:
- Ajeenkya DY Patil University
- Gujarat National Law University
- Indian Institute of Technology Madras
- Manipal Academy of Higher Education
- MS Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences
- Nirma University
- Oriental Institute of Science and Technology
- Rashtriya Raksha University
- National Research Development Corporation
Focused Seminars on Operational Needs and R&D Ecosystem
The symposium also hosted insightful seminars, including one on the ‘Overview of the Operational Conditions including Present and Future Technology Needs of Services,’ which underscored the blurring lines between conventional and non-conventional security threats. This session emphasized the need for mission-driven collaboration with academia to stay ahead in emerging defence challenges.
Another seminar on ‘Understanding the R&D Ecosystem in Academia’ focused on building institutionalized frameworks for defence-oriented research, highlighting the critical role of academia in national security innovation.
