Mumbai: Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and Denmark-based Svitzer have signed a landmark Letter of Intent (LoI) to collaborate on manufacturing a new generation of electric TRAnsverse tugboats in India. The agreement was formalized during India Maritime Week in Mumbai, marking a significant milestone in Svitzer’s global electrification roadmap and India’s emergence as a hub for advanced maritime manufacturing.
Collaboration to Produce Environmentally Progressive Tugboats
Under the agreement, CSL will leverage its state-of-the-art shipbuilding facilities in Kochi, along with Svitzer’s nearly 200 years of towage expertise, to develop these advanced vessels. The partnership aims to design and manufacture highly efficient and environmentally friendly tugs that align with India’s green port and green towage initiatives.
The TRAnsverse tug concept is central to the collaboration. These vessels are known for their exceptional manoeuvrability and precision control in confined waters, ensuring safer and more efficient port operations. Their advanced design reduces energy consumption and emissions, supporting global sustainability objectives. The tugs are intended for deployment in Indian ports as well as for Svitzer’s fleet renewal in international markets.
