New Delhi: On the occasion of Constitution Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation through a heartfelt letter, reflecting on the historic adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1949 and urging citizens to uphold its spirit as India progresses toward the vision of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India). Constitution Day, officially designated in 2015, commemorates the adoption of India’s foundational democratic document.
Remembering the Constitution and Its Architects
In his message, Prime Minister Modi described the Constitution as a transformative force that empowers individuals from all walks of life to serve the nation. Sharing personal reflections, he recalled bowing at the steps of Parliament in 2014 and placing the Constitution on his forehead in 2019, gestures he said symbolized his deep reverence for India’s democratic ethos.
“The Constitution has given countless citizens the power to dream and the strength to realise those dreams,” Modi wrote, paying tribute to visionary leaders such as Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and the distinguished women members of the Constituent Assembly, whose contributions continue to shape India’s constitutional framework.
Celebrating Milestones Linked to the Constitution
The Prime Minister revisited key national commemorations associated with the Constitution, highlighting the Samvidhan Gaurav Yatra held during the 60th anniversary and a special Parliamentary session for the 75th anniversary. Both events, he noted, witnessed extraordinary public participation, reflecting the Constitution’s emotional resonance among Indians.
This year’s Constitution Day is particularly significant, coinciding with several landmark anniversaries –
- The 150th birth anniversaries of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Bhagwan Birsa Munda
- The 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram
- The 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji
These milestones, Modi emphasized, underscore the primacy of duties—an idea enshrined in Article 51A of the Constitution and championed by Mahatma Gandhi, who believed that rights flow naturally from the fulfillment of duties.
Focusing on Duties and Nation-Building
Highlighting India’s journey toward its centenary of independence in 2047 and the Constitution’s 100th anniversary in 2049, Modi urged citizens to recognize the long-term impact of their actions. “The decisions we take today will shape the lives of generations,” he wrote, emphasizing the centrality of fulfilling one’s duties in nation-building.
He particularly stressed the importance of strengthening democracy through active participation, notably by exercising the right to vote. Schools and colleges were encouraged to honor first-time voters during Constitution Day celebrations, instilling a sense of responsibility and pride among the youth.
Prime Minister’s Social Media Message
On his official social media account X, Modi wrote –
“On Constitution Day, we pay tribute to the framers of our Constitution. Their vision and foresight continue to motivate us in our pursuit of building a Viksit Bharat. Our Constitution gives utmost importance to human dignity, equality, and liberty. While it empowers us with rights, it also reminds us of our duties as citizens, which we should always try to fulfill. These duties are the foundation of a strong democracy. Let us reiterate our commitment to strengthening Constitutional values through our actions.”
