Bengaluru: In a strategic move to expand its defence footprint, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is poised to secure a ₹30,000 crore order for the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) system by March 2026. This single order is expected to increase BEL’s current order book of ₹74,900 crore by nearly 40%, marking a major milestone in India’s self-reliant defence push.
Indigenous QRSAM at Core of Expansion Strategy
The QRSAM system (indigenously developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation) is a mobile, short-range air defence weapon designed to protect ground forces against aerial threats, including drones, helicopters, and fighter aircraft. Capable of swift deployment and multi-target engagement, it is a key element in India’s layered air defence network.
Following its approval by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on July 3, BEL now awaits the formal Request for Proposal (RFP). BEL CMD Manoj Jain expressed strong confidence in finalising the deal between February and March 2026, without spillover into the next financial year.
More Radar, Drone & Naval Orders Incoming
BEL is also anticipating a major radar system order from the Indian Navy for the EL/M-2248 Multi-Function Surveillance, Track and Guidance Radar (MF-STAR). Developed by Israel Aerospace Industries, the radar will be integrated into new-generation Indian warships. The company expects subsystem orders within 3–6 months, with configuration discussions currently underway.
Simultaneously, BEL is working on an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar for the Indian Air Force’s Su-30MKI fleet to replace the ageing Russian N011M Bars radar. Additional focus areas include sonar tech, drone and anti-drone warfare, and AI incubation centres for the Army and Navy.

Project Kusha and Drone Plans in Pipeline
Among BEL’s most ambitious projects is Project Kusha, an indigenous multi-layered extended-range air defence system expected to surpass the Russian S-400. Designed to neutralise advanced aerial threats, Project Kusha is estimated at ₹21,700 crore and is in its final stages of development. BEL anticipates securing this order within three to four years, post necessary approvals.
Drone development is another strategic priority. BEL plans to roll out four drone types with initial orders expected by FY 2025-26 and larger contracts following in the next two to three years.
Strong Financials Fuel Defence Push
BEL reported a 25% YoY jump in net profit to ₹969 crore for the June quarter, beating market expectations. The company is targeting 15% top-line growth for FY26 and has earmarked ₹1,000 crore in capital expenditure.
Exports are also gaining traction. BEL aims to increase the export share of total revenue from 4–5% to 10%, with a target of $120 million in export orders in FY26.
The overall order inflow by March 2026 could touch ₹1,05,000 crore, bolstered by QRSAM, emergency procurement by the Indian Army, naval radar deals, and other ongoing projects. BEL plans to invest 6–7% of its turnover (around ₹1,600–1,800 crore) into R&D this year to accelerate innovation in electronic warfare, AI, and training simulators.
