New Delhi: In a major crackdown on corruption within the police force, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Sub-Inspector Vijay Singh of Delhi Police, North Rohini Police Station, while he was accepting a bribe of ₹40,000. The arrest took place on August 5 following a detailed complaint lodged with the CBI by a citizen alleging extortion by the officer.
According to officials, SI Vijay Singh had initially demanded ₹50,000 from the complainant in exchange for not arresting the latter’s cousin and aiding in securing anticipatory bail. After negotiations, the deal was settled at ₹40,000. A trap was laid, and Singh was caught red-handed while accepting the money.
Police Commissioner Orders Suspension, Initiates Probe
The Commissioner of Delhi Police, SBK Singh, an IPS officer of 1988 batch, took immediate cognizance of the arrest and ordered the suspension of both Sub-Inspector Vijay Singh and Station House Officer (SHO) Khalid Hussain of North Rohini Police Station. A departmental inquiry has also been initiated against both officers.
SHO Khalid Hussain, a 1996 batch inspector, is believed to have close ties with the arrested sub-inspector. While he has not been arrested, sources say that his suspension was directed by the Police Commissioner due to possible complicity and supervisory failure.
History of the SHO Raises Eyebrows
Mr Hussain has had a controversial track record. During the recent assembly elections, he was posted at Tughlaq Road Police Station but was removed within a week. His tenure as SHO at North Rohini lasted only about six months before this incident surfaced.
Senior officials are pointing to a systemic issue – the restriction that prevents any inspector from serving as SHO for more than three years. Many in the department argue that this rule, implemented four years ago, has inadvertently contributed to rising corruption within the ranks, as officers focus more on building personal influence rather than maintaining law and order.
Growing Corruption Raises Concern
The Delhi Police has seen an alarming rise in corruption-related cases in recent months. Sources within the force admit that internal monitoring and accountability need urgent reform.
A senior police officer commented, “Unless the three-year SHO posting cap is reconsidered and stricter checks are put in place, we will continue to see officers engaging in corrupt practices. There is a need for institutional stability and stronger oversight.”
CBI Intensifies Crackdown on Corrupt Officers
This incident is just one among many in the CBI’s recent efforts to clamp down on corrupt law enforcement officers. Bribery complaints are being taken more seriously, and traps are being executed effectively to catch accused officials in the act.
The CBI has confirmed that a case has been registered against SI Vijay Singh, and further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the extent of the involvement of other personnel, including suspended SHO Khalid Hussain.
