The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a Rs. 1 crore development project for the revered Durvasa Rishi Ashram in Azamgarh, aiming to boost religious tourism and preserve one of the region’s most sacred spiritual landmarks. The project falls under the Chief Minister’s Tourism Development Scheme, and marks a significant step in integrating ancient pilgrimage destinations into the state’s mainstream tourism map.
The ashram, located at the confluence of the Tamsa and Manjusha rivers, has long been a centre of penance, devotion, and spiritual significance. It attracts thousands of pilgrims annually, especially during Kartik Purnima, when devotees gather for a three-day fair and take a holy dip at the sacred river confluence.
Enhancing Devotional Experience Through Modern Amenities
Announcing the project, Uttar Pradesh Tourism and Culture Minister Mr. Jaiveer Singh said that the development of Durvasa Ashram will provide both comfort and spiritual enrichment to visitors. “The ashram will be equipped with improved lighting, sanitation, drinking water facilities, and a visitor information centre. This will not only ease the pilgrimage experience but also help preserve the sanctity and heritage of this sacred site,” he stated.
Mr. Singh emphasized that such development will play a vital role in strengthening Purvanchal’s tourism footprint, generate employment, and benefit local communities economically.
Sage Durvasa and the Legacy of Azamgarh
According to legends, Sage Durvasa, known for his spiritual prowess and intense penance, arrived at this location from Chitrakoot at the age of 12. He is believed to have meditated at the site for years, making it a key spiritual hub through the Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, and Dwapara Yuga.
Azamgarh is also home to other spiritual landmarks like the Chandrama Muni Ashram, Dattatreya Temple, Bhawan Nath Temple, Avantikapuri Dham, and Nizamabad temples, which are gaining increasing tourist traction.
Tourism Growth Fuelling Economic Upliftment
Tourism in Azamgarh is witnessing remarkable growth. In 2024 alone, the district saw over 1.58 million visitors, and in the first quarter of 2025, more than 325,000 tourists had already visited. This surge is directly impacting the local economy, increasing employment, and revitalizing lesser-known heritage sites.
Mr. Jaiveer Singh added, “Uttar Pradesh is now a national leader in religious tourism. Under the 2022 Tourism Policy, we are committed to developing not just globally renowned sites like Varanasi and Ayodhya, but also spiritual centres like Durvasa Ashram. This will ensure that every region contributes to our state’s rich cultural tapestry and global tourism appeal.”
