New Delhi: Engineers India Limited (EIL) and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) have entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the engineering and design of civil structures for the Generic 220 MWe Bharat Small Reactor (BSR). The MoU was signed on September 24 at EIL’s headquarters in New Delhi.
Key Objectives of the MoU
Under this MoU, EIL will provide specialized engineering services for the “Analysis and Design of Civil Structures” for the Bharat Small Reactor — a re-engineered and safety-upgraded version of India’s standard 220 MWe Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR).
This partnership leverages:
- NPCIL’s expertise in the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of 220 MWe PHWRs.
- EIL’s engineering capabilities in delivering high-end design solutions across industrial sectors.
- Driving the Vision of Viksit Bharat and Net Zero by 2070
The collaboration aligns with the Government of India’s vision of scaling up clean and green nuclear energy to support the “Nuclear Energy Mission for Viksit Bharat”, targeting 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
The civil design upgrades for the BSR will incorporate:
- Latest safety regulations and codes
- Advanced design modifications
- Regulatory requirements from atomic energy authorities
This will not only ensure robust and safe infrastructure but also enable rapid deployment of standardized nuclear power plants across various industrial hubs in India.
Enabling Green Energy for Industry
The 220 MWe Bharat Small Reactor is positioned as a transformative solution for energy-intensive industries such as:
- Steel
- Aluminium
- Cement
These sectors can transition from vintage captive thermal plants to clean nuclear energy, improving sustainability and reducing carbon footprints.
The standardized BSR design is expected to:
- Facilitate faster adoption of nuclear power in the private industrial ecosystem
- Accelerate the phasing out of legacy fossil-fuel plants
- Support India’s Net Zero commitments by 2070
Leadership Presence at MoU Signing
The MoU was signed by:
- Director (Commercial), EIL
- Director (Technical), NPCIL
- in the esteemed presence of:
- Ms. Vartika Shukla, CMD, EIL
- Senior officials from both EIL and NPCIL
